The Elf albums are okay, but it's hard for me to get into them just because of how much heavier Ronnie's later material is. Maybe if i heard the Elf stuff before his Sabbath and solo stuff, i would like it more. I will say this though; Never More is one of Ronnie's greatest songs ever!!!!

I like "trying to burn the suN" most of all. I'm not yet a huge lover of them but I can tell ya I enjoy "Black Swampy Water" and "Wonderland" which has amazing singing.

Out of all the older stuff, I like The Elves She's Not The Same from '69, this B-side certainly hinted at the power and emotion to come. Another interesting cut is that live version of War Pigs, was that a foreshadowing or what?

I'm a huge ELF fan, to me the music of that band oozes with all the greatness that the rocknroll of the lates 60s and early 70s was! I think its important to mention that the lead guitar player on the two best ELF albums, Carolina County Ball and Trying to Burn the Sun, was Steve Edwards, who complimented Ronnie's great singing with exceptional tone and feel with some monster solos throughout (just listen to RocknChair Blues, LA 59, Ain't it all Amusing). Anyway, Steve is still actively playing in the Carolinas with various bands and any talk of a reunion should undoubtedly involve him.
I would also like to mention that Gary Driscoll's drumming on these albums is second to none, fast and hard with impeccable timing and changes, the guy was a monster player and the circumstances surrounding his death are tragic.
Mickey Soule's keyboard and Craig Gruber's bass playing were also stellar.
Indeed, Ronnie's singing was and is fantastic (Stewart and Plant of that day only can compare) and really drove these songs, but it wasn't all Ronnie - ELF was a Classic band and it's up to us (Ronnie's fans) to make sure that this stuff still gets heard and talked about. Wink

I'm a huge Elf fan as well. When I heard Happy for the first few times, my mouth litterally hung open. Surprised I couldn't believe I was hearing RJD singing that way. His voice is SO beautiful and it shows so clearly in that song. The lyrics are also a little ahead of their time as well..."crazy little feeling, hanging from the ceiling with a bag tied over my head"...and if you listen closely(yes, I am a bit obsessive about the way things are sung) to the way he sings 'head', well, if you've ever done it, you know what I mean.

Elf is a great band and I just can't imagine why we haven't grown up hearing Nevermore on the radio like all the other classic rock. I mean, did they just "miss it?"

WTF?? Confused Confused

Elf is a great band, I perfectly agree with you!!! They are an underrated band.
Now Mickey Lee Soule works with Ian Gillan and Deep Purple. He has been on Ian Gillan own band and, at the moment, he is the keyboard technician of Deep Purple!

Magic!

Mario

P.S.: I'm listening to "Rainbow" by Elf right now from Carolina County Ball! Very Happy

OK people you have heard the ELF era .... what about earlier than that...

I have some interesting albums like:

Ronnie & The Redcaps (1958-1961)
Ronnie & The Prophets-Live at Domino's (1963)
Ronnie & The Prophets (1961-1967)
The Electric Elves (1967)
The Elves (1968)
The Elves-Live at the Beacon (1971)
The Elves-Live at the Bank (1972)

we are talking for very classic blues/rock actually....
