| Well I was recently flipping threw a Cradle of Filth booklet that came with my brother's CD. Man do they ever take that shit seriously! I decided to ultimitely quit playing hard rock/heavy metal and loosen everything up a bit (to sound more like the first Rainbow album-but with more of an Elf sound). I was getting to annoyed with my (former) band members and their refusal to play any Dio songs (especially Black Sheep of the Family) so I left. No band is worth being in if Dio's wonderful songs aren't involved! I mean, I think Ronnie has fun with his music and stunts on stage, so why shouldn't I? |

I don't totally agree with you, cause many bands are not serious these days.
Music is a taste. Taste is personal.
What do you think of all the top 40 shit? Many of that 'artists' are not serious. Many of that 'artists' don't actually know what music is. That's not just a taste.
There's a line between serious and not-serious bands.
Man, it's difficult to make my point. Anybody knows where I'm talking about? _________________ --- BURN (Dutch Heavy Metal) ---

I'll say yes. One thing that is definately a shame is when artists take themselves too seriously, not just the music. Everybody's sh*t stinks, but some celebrities get too far removed from the common man. Anything that I've ever heard about Ronnie James Dio is that he is a gentleman and completely down to earth. I think we are some pretty lucky fans. _________________ Sit on it, Potsie. |

I think some of these guys 'take themselves' too seriously...I did vote for yes, but that's the reason... _________________ Calcitra Clunis |

Yeah I do. I can see both sides of the point though. Perhaps as we get older things get more serious to us and we tend to notice those things. Then again maybe not.
I see it more like a car. When I didn't have this car I never paid much attention to the number of cars like that. Once I bought one or became interested in that kind of car BAM I see them all over the place.
We often look back and think of past times as golden eras etc. We see them as utopias but forget about all the bad that happened then as well.
Well at least here in the States, not sure of over in Europe, we had the Viet Nam era of rock to where the music was serious in talking about social equality etc. Metal itself thoughout every decade took on serious issues. We the listener may not have been aware of what the song was really about. _________________ Smacks & Manly Thumps,

Very good point Devin.
The total 'metal thing' got more important than the real reason of the song. Right? _________________ --- BURN (Dutch Heavy Metal) ---

Well I think that is what most miss. We bash certain bands and say they ruined metal but they did not. Metal became image and that was started before eyeliner, lipstick, and poofy hair. It tried to take on this macho manly man image, you know of Rob Halford of Judas Priest, lol. That became more important than can one actually play their instrument and can one actually write something that is not a rip off or cover of something else already done. Image sells. It always has. In the 80s you had who can play the faster but not necessarily who can play the cleanest. I think the music industry has gotten more corporate in that it nurtures less than in the past and there were more freedoms to artists in the past but it none the less was still corporate from almost the time that Chuck Berry played that electric go go johnny go ... and Elvis was shaking his hips.
But that is the same for any genre really. Who plays just to play in a garage? People play not simply for the love of playing but because they want that adreneline (sp?) rush on the stage ... sex drugs and rock n roll and for many that is probably the exact order.
They want a piece of that fame machine. To some it was simply a means to get chicks while others saw it as a lifestyle and career choice.
But we the fans often thump along to the music and not so much the lyrics. How many of Dio's lyrics are about serious issues in life? A lot of them. Kill the King may just be a song paroding a game of chess but we can look at it and see how it can take on real world issues but again that particular song may have just been for fun. Timeless poetry is ambiguous (sp?). It can take on many meanings to the reader.
I think there are those who write fluff and that is songs that are just meant to sell, to fill in space etc. I think there are those who write to give a message about a certain topic etc.
I think there are some that take the image too seriously but as far as being too serious about it as a career well it is a job and they need to eat so why wouldn't they take it seriously. _________________ Smacks & Manly Thumps,

I have no idea about new music, every band that I listen to is from decades ago, Dio/Iron Maiden/Motorhead/Ramones/Elvis/ect.ect., anyways if I get board with my music, I go backwards, to something like Johnny Cash, Little Richard, Elton John ect.ect. I have enough music to last me a lifetime, no need to listen to new bands that make no sense, and have disregard, & disrespect to Rock N' Roll itself.
The era of Rock N' Roll that we grew up on, is timeless, eternal, and is in danger of beign Razed from the earth. I believe in my black heart that know band, new or whatever, can win me over with 1 hit whonders.

To leave a "covers band" because they won't play a song you like, and they presumably don't, smacks of "throwing your toys out of the pram". Grow up!!! _________________ Sick of all of this

Well I have to say this is damn cool. I nice discussion and no name-calling. Like another posted above; I think I need to take a deep breath.
I voted "yes" but let me explain why. I'm not just a metal fan, I pretty much enjoy all forms of Rock music. Dio is like the Stones to me... it just goes hand in hand with Rock N Roll. Could anyone here even imagine Rock N Roll without Dio? I know I can't. I voted yes because I feel that too many artists feel they have to be intellectuals and politically active to write music that makes a difference. They should all take a page from Ronnie and write lyrics that appeal to the individual's soul. Stuff you can keep listening to until the day you die because not would be like turning off yourself.
I'm not against activism or "seriousness" in music. How could I be and still remain a loyal Bob Dylan fan? Would be pretty silly huh? I guess my point is the classic artists (like Ronnie and others) know how to spread it around. Most of the time it is best to just write about life... or like Ronnie often does: write about life but let's add some sci-fi, some fantasy, some darkness, some light, and sometimes even some humor (come on folks, if Big Sister and When A Woman Cries isn't 'toungue-in-cheek' then I don't know what is). Ultimately music should be up-lifting; and so many artists today forget that... thank God for Ronnie James Dio.
Anyway, I know I'm kinda 'all over the place' on this one but for better or worse, that is why I voted 'yes'. |
