In my opinion, people would say that Alice Cooper had more of an influence and created a whole new kind of rock, and that Ozzy was before Dio in Sabbath and has received so much more recognition, that in a random poll, he would come before Dio.
However, this is a Dio fan club site. Ronnie James Dio is the Rock God to end all Rock Gods in my opinion because of his talent first and foremost, but also for his style, longevity and absolute dedication and gratitude for his fans.
I know that we in the States are feeling left behind, but when you compare going to a Dio show versus an Iron Maiden show for example, Ronnie is the king for sure. He makes a real connection with his audience and has every time I've seen them.
I always pay for front row tickets when I go, so I see how he makes it a point to look his fans in the eyes and he smiles or winks at them. He truely appreciates his fans and it shows. Bruce Dickenson was like in his own world and he was great, but it felt like the audience didn't matter.
So obviously for me, Ronnie will always be the God of heavy metal. _________________ "...you were a fool but that's cool, it's alright!"

I'll give you 3 guesses
That's not to diminish the others. Ozzy is a legendary performer and writer (and before anyone says "But Ozzy had no input in the Sabbath writing process", don't forget his solo career, and he did do all the vocal melodies in Sabbath). He was probably the first 'metal' singer, definately instantly recognisable, and in the younger days, the embodiment of how rock stars were supposed to behave - totally off the rails - hence his GOD status.
Then again Ronnie brought a new sound to metal, with his vocals, and fantasy lyrics, which has been a massive influence to the whole power-metal genre, and no-one matches his singing ability.
But, I believe, GOD status will eventually be measured by the legacy of music the man leaves behind. For that reason, Alice comes out on top. With his huge catalogue of releases, with so minute a number of poor tracks and insanely wide variety in musical styles and ideas, he is the winner in my book (even if it is questionable whether he is a rock or metal performer, but that's besides the point). He also doesn't do badly on the scales for influence, outlandish behaviour, longevity, and the sheer effort which goes into every show he puts on. _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

Oh boy.
Well, IMHO, Ozzy is the worst of the list. I just never got into that buffoon. In fact, since the line between metal and hard rock is blurry at times, I'd have added Robert Plant on that list...and I'd choose him over Ozzy ANY day. Great pipes, great stage presence, and his ability to conjur imagery not unlike RJD's makes him a fine addition.
But c'mon. Can anyone really top Ronnie?
In talent, and longevity...not to mention his huge influence, he's by far THE choice for Metal God. He already has the name-sake. |

Well bugger me with a fish fork!
Not suprisingly there is a very 'weighted' poll result in favour or Our Ron, and considering were are on a DIO forum it doesn't come as a shock <hold the fish fork>.
I am a HUGE Ronnie fan so based on personal opnion I have voted for him. But if this poll was run on a more general rock forum I'm sure that this same poll would display a different sentiment.
We as Dio fans were always going to let him come out on top. and quite right too _________________ The Devil is me and I'm holding the key to the gates of sweet hell BABYLON!!!!!! RJD |

| It is too biased on here to ask such a question...but as much as I am a massive RJD fan I have to be honest and say that for his influences on so many metal acts over MANY GENERATIONS and Marilyn manson is one prime example, and I have never seen a better gig anywhere than that put on by the LEGENDARY....ALICE COOPER.....sorry but Ronnie does not come close to Alice's achievements. |

Good points, Ozzy had stage presence but his music has sucked monkey balls for most of the last 15-20 years.
I'd say Bruce Dickinson should be on that list. Along with the Metal god Halford and Ronnie, those three are the holy trinity of metal singers IMO. |

No not my favorite. It's kinda cheesy actually. But somehow it seemed to capture a place in my heart. If I had to pic a fav it would probably be Exorcist or Devil's Advocate. Know your enemy. |
