Therion was amazing. As you said Holymagica, I definitly hear some of their past influencing the music.

I wasn't to crazy abou Illicit Rite or Morbid Angel, but they both diserve another chance.

Nile and Bolt Thrower were okay too, I liked 'em.

I still have to find some stuff from Worm Phlegm.

Did anyone like the bands I listed?

I was listening to THERION this morning....Lemuria/Sirius B...not listen to them in a while and was amazing listening to both cds....Yeah I have listened to the songs in the links....I like some of it....but as I said....I get mixed up with Black/Doom/Death metal bands.....there is many bands that are not really Death Metal but are very close.

Just wondering if any of you death metal fans have ever been into or noticed the subtle textures of work like Pink Floyd? Thier power that is pure simplicity, the ability to play very little and yet extract maximum feeling. The same thing is found in DIO just at a different degree that's the stuff that makes music last in the heart and makes you put it in again and again.
For me... this is the eliment that is lacking in death metal, there may be catchy riffs here and there but the dork bouncing around with the microphone and somthing stuck in his throat ruins that for me. If they had A SINGER i may find more in it. Did I just find a generation gap here? Shocked Oh no.... I'm getting old! Crying or Very sad

GG...I am a huge Pink Floyd fan...a band just a way ahead of their time.....like the mighty Queen....but if you must listen to Queen keep away from the hits..and keep to the album tracks...if you know what I mean.....''death on two legs''...the guitar riff in that song is Cool Cool Cool Cool
Its is a generation gap thing as well.....but most of my friends are aged from 20 to 50... Laughing .

Agreed, Floyd is great stuff, first band that got me into rock.

Black/Doom/Death metal, I have no idea what's the difference either, I don't really care, if the vocals are growling I call it death metal.

I like the whole history thing ye posted, very informative.

History was interesting....Not written by me from a book ''The History of Metal'' by Vijay Prozak

You should check out....this band Draconian....I have 2 of their cds....''Where Lovers Mourn '' and ''Arcane Rain Fell'' they have new cd coming out soon....these 2 cds are really amazing....read this review about ''Where Lovers Mourn ''Starting in 1994 and after writing several demos,Draconian finally release their debut album "Where Lovers Mourn" in 2003.This album offers us a fantastic blend of heavy, atmospheric and deeply emotional music.Their sound could be described as dark and melancholic gothic/death metal with excellent female vocals and very convincing male/brutal vocals.Although their roots are found in bands such as Tristania, Trail Of Tears and My Dying Bride, Draconian manage to create their own sound and their own sweet and depressing atmosphere. The compositions which are mostly mid-tempo(but never become boring!) show the signs of a very mature (both emotionally and technically) band. The guitars create great melodies, something that is enhanced by the beautifully used keybords. All in all, I advise you not to devoid your self of this seducing offering!Lay down and enjoy this trip!

Review for ''Arcane Rain Fell'' must admit that after hearing that Draconian were releasing a second album, I was both excited and worried. Excited because I loved their first album and I couldn't wait for new music, but also worried because of the news that they would be re-recording one of my all-time favourite songs, "Death, Come Near Me", and I couldn't imagine how that song could sound any better.
I needn't have worried. This album is, if anything, better than "Where Lovers Mourn". There is not one song that is out of place, not one song I don't like, and despite my previous skepticism, the re-recording of "Death, Come Near Me" is masterful. While the album centres around themes of the arcane and the occult, there is also something deeply personal to this album that I feel many people can identify with. Draconian have nailed their style with this album.
The music is at all times beautifully haunting, and while "Arcane Rain Fell" concentrates much more on the male vocals than "Where Lovers Mourn", the female vocals are beautifully done. They're bittersweet, sorrowful and yet retain a warmth that adds a ray of light to a dark soundscape.
It's hard to choose favourite songs on this album, as they're all perfect for the feel and atmosphere of the album. "A Scenery of Loss" is a wonderful opening track which slowly builds up to a crescendo of emotion before bringing the listener back down, ready for the next song. "Death, Come Near Me" is the perfect finale, and while different from the demo version I fell in love with, it is no less beautiful. It's a musical journey of loss and hopelessness, leading to one of the most amazing and hopeful epilogues I have ever heard.
These 2 cds....a wee bit different for pure death metal, but there roots are in death metal.

My mate in Russia...got me into this band....don't know if you know of them.....heres an update on them.

Swedish melodic death metallers DARK TRANQUILLITY have posted the following message on their official web site:

"The songwriting for the new album is progressing nicely. 10-11 songs have now been demoed, and we're busy doing the final adjustments and modifications before it's time to depart for the long awaited Japan/Korea/Australia tour.

"A bootleg clip of 'The Wonders at your Feet' and 'Monochromatic Stains' from the show in Costa Rica last June is now uploaded to our MySpace page for your limitless enjoyment. Find it in the video section."

DARK TRANQUILLITY recently announced that their next studio album will be produced by Danish producer Tue Madsen. "The effort will be mixed in his Antfarm studio, while the actual recording will take place in different premises here in Sweden," the band said. "Drums will be set to tape at the old Studio Fredman, while guitars, bass, vocals and electronics will be immortalized at Rogue Music." Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "Blind at Heart", "The Lesser Faith", "InsignifiCunt" and "The Plunge"."

DARK TRANQUILLITY completed a North American tour earlier in the year with OPETH, THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND and DEVILDRIVER in support of "Character", their highly acclaimed latest album that brought these originators of the famed Gothenburg scene back to the forefront of the genre. "Character", recorded once again at Studio Fredman (IN FLAMES, ARCH ENEMY), has also been praised as their most groundbreaking yet as it retains all of the band's classic elements and thought-provoking lyrical content while blending the perfect amount of unrelenting aggression and melody.

Satanic Dirge was awesome, very different, I like how instrumental it is. Sounds like a horror movie track.

Draconian was excellent to, I really like the combination of the voicals.

Dark Tranquillity is definity one of my favorites so far, I can't explain it, Necrophobic's, Naglfar's, and their vocals all seem to fit into the music, where a couple other bands I've listen to, the vocals and music are like separate peices.

Very nice, thanks a ton.

Immortal is another one I like so far, they sound a bit like Dimmu Borgir.

piracy_of_life.....I really think ''The Burning Halo'' could be Draconian
biggest seller to date....I love tracks. Cool

"The Burning Halo" - Track by track:

~ She Dies ~

"She Dies" is one of the latest efforts of Draconian and also chosen to be the opening track for the new album. You can expect profound, evocative and deeply mournful soundscapes combined with a heart-rending love story, which tells the tale of two souls who are forced to part from one another. It's a romantically despondent gothic/doom creation and without any doubt; one of the most tear-filled moments of Draconian history.

~ Through Infectious Waters (A Sickness Elegy) ~

This is an elegy about a world sick, distorted and corrupt; our world in a possible future. With this new song we have tried to create a scenery of collapse and revulsion as mankind finally is forced to recognize their downfall. In the midst of this, a lost soul wander the earth, in hope for the absolute deliverance from human depravity.

"Through Infectious Waters (A Sickness Elegy)" is a song which speaks for itself and is unlike any other Draconian effort. The character is apocalyptic, cold and desolate and it’s built upon a field of belligerence and disaster.

~ The Dying ~

"The Dying" is quite close to "Through Infectious Waters" in topic, but refers more to the world as a terrifying spiritual struggle – alienation, as if you were stranded on a distant shore, far from home without a possibility to leave. Only death would set you free... and all around you the world is falling apart.

This grim effort of “The Burning Halo” is the most doom-oriented of the three new songs – releasing dejection and gloom alongside strong feelings of wrath and dismay. The soaring and beautiful vocals of Lisa creates a bittersweet contrast in the stern blackness and broadens the song to a higher level.

~ Serenade of Sorrow ~

The song originally hailing from the never officially released luciferian theme demo The Closed Eyes of Paradise.

"Serenade of Sorrow" is perhaps the one and only true Draconian classic and used to be the opening act of live shows. The sound is much closer to gothic metal than doom and was the first track out on the - above mentioned - 1999 demo. The song assembles a symphonic atmosphere within a distinctive metal setting and with an intense growl versus angelic vocal manifestation.

In sound it replicates pure anguish and innovative darkness in a tumultuous scenery, right before the rebel angels suffered bitter defeat. Within this heart-rending chaos we can still find astonishing beauty, originated from the tender vocal cord of Miss Lisa Johansson.

"Serenade of Sorrow" has been born again in a well-designed restoration, and at the same time very loyal and faithful to the old version.

~ The Morningstar ~

The song originally hailing from the never officially released luciferian theme demo The Closed Eyes of Paradise.

"The Morningstar" is a versatile song with a strong epic feel. It deals mainly with a doomy and gothic sound but proceeds into a more aggressive and hostile approach. This track is about how to resist divine oppression and how to break free from its bondage. The title refers to Lucifer, who pleads to the angels left in Heaven to oppose their chains and unite with him to find independence. This is what the Christian faith would call "the devils temptation", but in fact it’s just a matter of freedom.

"The Morningstar" is Draconian’s second epic (the first is "The Midwinter Sleep" back in 1995) before they progressed further into a doomier sound in year 2000. It was originally fashioned back in 1998 and to be recorded for The Closed Eyes of Paradise demo one year later. The song rapidly became a favourite among the fans.

~ The Gothic Embrace ~

The song originally hailing from the never officially released luciferian theme demo The Closed Eyes of Paradise.

Highly expressive and amorously dark, "The Gothic Embrace" deals with graceful and poignant structures both in music and lyric. In this restoration we have dared to make some things somewhat different, still as the song remains fairly true to its original.
This is a song mostly built upon pure sentiment, which surrounds its irreligious purpose, in order to find everlasting peace in the night… secluded from the blinding light of God. The fantastic vocals of Lisa blends together in symbiosis with the numinous keyboardstructure, preparing a vast spectrum of bitterness.

"The Gothic Embrace" is one of Draconian’s most treasured songs from the past... and it speaks primarily to those who favours the more gothic/ romantic elevation of their sound.

~ On Sunday They Will Kill the World ~

In 1970 Dutch songwriter Rock van der Linden wrote a great apocalyptic rock song for his band Ekseption, assembled upon a prelude by the classical Russian composer Rachmaninov; In structure rather easy but very large in heaviness.

The band decided to both interpret this great bombastic tune and honour it by just being Draconian; with a momentous spotlight on a doomy, vast and diverse sound. And it worked out very well alongside the old school rock sound and the fundament of classical music.

The 2006 version of "On Sunday They Will Kill the World" wears a dark shroud... and reflects a monumental piece of doom.

~ Forever My Queen ~

It’s not every day Draconian decides to take on the mission to construe the heavy riffing art of Bobby Liebling and Pentagram; one of the origins of doom metal in the ‘70s. Pentagram has been a long-time influence and favourite band of songwriter Johan Ericson - which now is revealed by the dedication of Draconian.

"Forever My Queen" is a quite deviating track if compared to the ordinary material of Draconian even though the song is still vital when it comes to the Draconian sound in broad-spectrum. Most of the members are big fans of the early ‘70s rock sound, so this is a salutation both to that and to the unyielding foundation of doom metal.

Chuck Schuldiner is a worshippable man.

Nothing more to say about Death Metal, I have.

(well, maybe some little things about a few bands, but nothing worth mentioning compared to Chuck!)
