I feel this deserves a topic of its own.
I just recently decided to get into death metal, was never really a fan of it simply because I didn't think I would like the death grunting, but I must say this music has definitly grown on me.
I'd like this topic to be about sharing the different bands and giving opinions on them. I'm really looking to find more.
All start listing the ones I like so far...
Finntroll
http://www.myspace.com/finntrolltheband
The band that got me interested. They sing in Swedish because the original vocalist (gone now because a throat cancer I beleive) said Swedish "sounds damn trollish". Trolls are the main topic of their lyrics. I highly recomend watching the music video too.
Necrophobic
http://www.myspace.com/necrophobic
I don't have much to say other than as of now their my favorite death metal band.
Amon Amarth
http://www.myspace.com/amonamarth
They're kind of like Finntroll, but instead of trolls their lyrics are usually about vikings. Stop the music video when you first veiw the site, or ye'll have two songs running at the same time.
Naglfar
http://www.myspace.com/naglfar
If Necrophobic is my favorite, these guys are my second. The song on the music video is simply amazing, make sure to watch it.
Nekrogoblikon
http://www.myspace.com/nekrogoblikon
Don't let the dialoge in the beginning of most of their songs deter you from listening. Their is a lot of talent here, there should be a album coming out at the end of the year. All the songs I've heard so far deal with goblins and killing humans, and nothing is better than that.
Summoning
http://www.myspace.com/upthehammers
They have a very epic sound to their music, like it could be the background music to a Lord of the Rings movie.
Hocico
http://www.myspace.com/hocico
This one isn't truly death metal, in short a merge of techno and metal. The vocals are harsh, so I figured I could put it here.
I realize a lot of people on the forum dislike death metal and don't even consider it true music, but I urge all the people out there that are stuck in that mindset to give these bands a listen. I used to be stuck there, and I feel these bands are a good place to start listening.
Please don't post pure hate, if ye refuse to give it a chance and dislike death metal please ignore this topic! _________________ you put your hope into the sky

I love the music the riffs are crazy....but can't listen to some of the vocals...I like some songs by Cannibal Corpse...but after a while....the vocals are too much and I have to get the cat off the ceiling
Anyway you should checkout Nile,Morbid Angel and some Bolt Thrower....I really like the music...from these bands.
One of my favourite bands...started out as a Death Metal,
THERION.....but they are more Symphony Metal....these days
Anyway...I will not ignore this topic!
And I totally agree....with you...if you don't like the topic,
Keep away from the thread. |

You know, my best friend is really into Death Metal, and I always hated it - it just sounded like noise to me. However, recently not only have I started to appreciate the playing and musicianship, but the odd song has the odd part which don't sound too bad to me!! Perhaps it's something that will grow on me over time. Long way to go yet though...
Oh and I am a Therion fan too!!! _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

I only have Lemuria/Sirius B ....but as you said the musicianship shows intelligence ...... I have never heard any of Therion's earlier work.On these 2 cds...there is so much to hear, amazing guitar work on all of the cds....there is still little hints from their past as a death metal band. |

Cool, added all them to my list of bands I have to check out.
About Cannibal Corpse though, I gave them I listen awhile ago, and there is just something different about it. The vocals just don't seem it fit with the music, they seem too overpowering, like there is a band playing in the background and some other random guy is screaming lyrics. Same thing with Dark Funeral, on a much lesser scale though. But that's what I said about all death metal a couple months ago, perhaps I'll give them another listen. _________________ you put your hope into the sky

I am with you with the vocals in Cannibal Corpse ....but I like there music....there music could be in horror movie...with the vocals edited out I sure if....I was to look hard enough I am sure there music already has been in a movie.
I gave the Remorse Crusader a hard time about....a cd called Third Wish....by Feinstein....anyway...after reading Scot Clayton's review in Amazon...I went and got it.....and its just amazing the cd...not keen on the vocals but the songs are all great metal tracks...so its good to keep an open mind...to all genres, hell I still listen to classical music |

Cannibal Corpse were in the first Ace Ventura fim (on stage).
As another point, there is a demo out there somewhere by a band called Worm Phlegm. They are a funeral metal band (or some other daft genre is given to them - something like that). Anyway, My friend played me that the other day, and I was expecting it to sound like Cannibal Corpse, Nile etc. But it was nothing like that. It's just very slow, sludgy, with a feeling of inevitability about it. It WILL make you feel funny listening to it. It's really long and does put you in an odd frame of mind. Very impressive to do that with music. Listening to it is almost like you feel as though you are on a slowly moving conveyor belt heading towards a really nasty demise. Very odd piece of work. _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

The title is certainly straight to the point!! I can't say I like that though. Well, the slower part was just about bearable, but I don't think the singer's voice is quite right. Sounds a little light compared with the aggression of the music.
A question: To those who DO like death metal, what is it about it that appeals to you? I asked my friend this the other day, and he said that it was the brutatlity of it. I tried to see where he was coming from, but found it hard because that isn't what I seek in music. I can appreciate it, but not really enjoy it. So what appeals to you guys? _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

Not to step on anyones taste but I can't find anything about the stuff that I like, I've seen several bands live that have "cookie monster vocals" but found nothing in it for me. _________________ GUITARGOD |

Haha Cookie Monster vocals, good definition!

I'd have to answer the same way. Death metal is just so much more bold, and heavy. The lyrics I've read touch the darkest emotions of the human mind. It is just a total different experience from the norm. I guess it could be compared to my love for techno/industrial, both forms of music offer something totally different to the listener.
I also love listen to music I can creep people out with.
oh, and sorry if I lack any opinions of the bands ye guys have listed, I've been pretty busy helping my dad build a garage. Many thanks though, I can't wait for some true free time. _________________ you put your hope into the sky

Hehe, strange you should mention the lyrics - I can't understand a single bloody word!! Cookie Monster is too clear to be compared to the majority of Death Metal vocalists!! My friend showed me some of the lyrics, and I find them too over the top, to the point where they're funny. But I guess it depends on whether the band take themselves seriusly or not. If they just want fun, then it's not too bad. If they believe all that jazz, then there is a serious problem!!
In a way I'd quite like to be able to enjoy Death Metal, but at the moment I just can't!!
(Although I do like King Diamond, and someone put him in that category...I don't agree, but if so, then I like one Death Metal band!! ) _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

...I hear ya coop...I believe that Death Metal was created because these bands simply could not find a frontman who was capable of "singing"...it's much easier to grunt... ...I believe that this style is what Ronnie would sound like if he attempted to sing while trying to take a CRAP!... ...& for the most part...the guitarists in this genre never took the time or made an effort to learn how to play a guitar solo... |
