Rainbow-after Dio

Everyone says Black Sabbath died when Ozzy left (yeah right), but I want to know if people think if Rainbow died when Dio left? "Cause I like Joe Lynn Turner and the three albums he made. What I found interesting is Ritchie Blackmore didn't forget Ronnie and a number of times I've heard other Rainbow singers sing Dio-era Rainbow songs.

As it should be. A Rainbow song is a Rainbow song, regardless who sang it originally.

I love that when Tony Martin was in Black Sabbath he sang songs from all eras. I dislike that when Ronnie came back they ignored the Tony Martin era. And I HATE that with Ozzy all they ever do is the same old Ozzy era songs.

Well, my favourite Black Sabbath singers are (in order):

1) Ronnie James Dio (the best!)
2) Ian Gillan
3) Tony Martin
4) Glenn Hughes
5) Ozzy Osbourne

I think i didn't forget anybody... I don't like Ozzy so much...

About Rainbow I can say that they've been always great, but the Dio-era was the best Rainbow era...

There's some OK Rainbow stuff post-Dio, but nothing anywhere near as good as the three albums they did with him. It's like two different bands, really.

After dio left rainbow still manage to make some good songs and the songs i really loved is "street of dreams" and "all night long". Laughing

Difficult to cure is o.k.!
But I think Stranger in us all was the way back to real Rainbow.
Hall of the mountain king is great,Ariel and Insatiable too and
Doogie White fits perfect!
Sad that it was only for one album Crying or Very sad

I am a big fan of Rainbow..maybe my favourite band ever.....so I have collected all of their cds...I like ALL the singers...everyone bring something different to the band,Joe Lynn Turner/Blackmore wrote some great songs on ''Straight Between the Eyes''and is a classic cd,when Dio left Rainbow that was the end of an era...for me,but Rainbow became a new band.I can say with hand on my heart....I treasure ALL of my Rainbow cds.Different story with Black Sabbath....I like some with Ozzy mainly the early ones,but when Dio left Black Sabbath...I never bought another cd by the band,but after reading some the guys comments on here about Tony Martin and Black Sabbath...I will have to checkout his work.

Just happened to watch a Rainbow 84-Japan concert DVD with Joe Lynn Turner. Ritchie does an amazing job as always, but what strikes me... I've never before seen JLT live, but this guy is strange. He never smiles, he rarely looks at anyone at all, mostly stares into nowhere while singing. His live vocals are somewhere between solid and brilliant, his voice has a soulful touch and really shines in the quieter parts. He does best with his own songs, but clearly lacks the ability to capture his audience. His stage performance is somewhat sterile, I don't know if he's always been like this... or this was just a "cold" show. The guy's got both a voice and the looks, but something is missing. No magic there. And Dio songs by Turner... I don't know. His version of Catch The Rainbow on this DVD is well done technically, but... it hurts me all the same. He makes no attempt to sing it like Dio which is fair enough, but still... and those female backing vocals are awful throughout the show.
Well, maybe I should try and watch another one.

Holymagica, definitely give Tony Martin a listen. Amazing singer, sadly absent from the scenes for more than 10 years, but back now. Look into Headless Cross and Tyr with Black Sabbath, and the recent solo album Scream is worth it as well. The first song on this album, Raising Hell, is done by a dead drummer (drums off a tape by Cozy Powell), an old keyboarder (Geoff Nicholls, the one), a middle-aged singer (TM) and an emerging guitar player, TMs own son. Truly a historic piece!

Rainbow after Dio is awful radio rock that sounds more like Boston than Led Zeppelin. If you can't stand garbage like "Stone Cold" and "Since You Been gone" you might like Rainbow after Dio left.

Whether or not you like the songs of the post Dio era, i think its worth checking out some of the solo's Ritchies plays on the later records.
