I rate his work with Black Sabbath as his best. I thought he had more freedom with Black Sabbath than Rainbow.
Blackmore placed to many restrictions on Dio's creativity and had the band going in a more commercial direction starting with some songs on the Long Live Rock and Roll album. Dio's voice was made for pure metal and Ritchie Blackmore didn't seem to know whether he wanted a heavy metal, AOR, progressive rock band. Versality is good, but RJD just seem to have been born for metal. |

Despite his time in Sabbath and as a solo artist, Ronnie will always be remembered by most of his long-term fans as the voice of Rainbow. He was at his most creative with Ritchie on Rainbow Rising in particular. It’s truly unfortunate that they have not collaborated since Ritchie disbanded Purple nearly 13 years ago despite some serious discussions.

I voted for Black Sabbath. I think Dio and Iommi brought out the best in each other, creatively speaking.
Rainbow Rising is sure a close second, though. |
