...being a guitar player myself...I chose Malmsteen...alltough I have "equal" admiration for both...but for very different reasons...Malmsteen clearly has a larger variety of techniques in his repetoire...& is also the more speedy & versatile player...however...I believe Ritchie helped "pioneer" these techniques...& plays with more emotion...in other words...I like the songs he "used to write" & play "better"...especially the ones he wrote with Ronnie & Rainbow...

Blackmore plays with feeling and emotion with awesome tasty riffs. Yngwie just plays scales as fast as he can and is so predicatble. Lots of guys can shred scales, but can not do it with heart, emotion, and tasteful feeling. 10 notes per second is cool, but it is not greatness!

So true it's odd but Malmstiens style he will run thin on material unless he branches out a bit, it's almost like he's cashing it all in right away and leaving nothing for later. Confused

I also prefer Blackmore, but since Blackmore obviously doesn't want to reunite Rainbow, what if Ronnie teamed up with as many of the original members as possible and get Malmsteen on guitar and reform Rainbow himself??

...put it this way...I believe that Yngwie would have NO problem playing Ritchie's material...but do you guys think that Ritchie could pull off most of Malmsteen's stuff???...very few players can!... Idea

I would pick Ritchie on the whole . It's clear Yngwie is better in terms of technique . And imo if he didnt play so fast 95% of the time he would be better than Ritchie . But he is a one style player
and Ritchie was more unique .

Blackmore without a doubt. While Malmsteem is better technically, but Ritchies writes better songs on guitar.

Has Malmsteem written any classics like Child in Time or Stargazer?

...cant disagree with that...while Yngwie never ceases to amaze me with his fretwork...I would much rather listen to Ritchies "songs" with Rainbow & Purple...

I don't know. I think Yngwie is a bit better lead player....I love yngwie's music but I think Ritchie has written even better songs than yngwie has. I'll vote Yngwie because he only has 1 votes. I saw Yngwie live and he was incredible.

...Exactly Sabbath...some people say that Malmsteens techniques are overkill...but to watch him live...he is "un-surpassed" as a guitar player!...I would Love to hear him write some songs with Ronnie!...that being said...I can still see why the majority of fans prefer Ritchie's work with Rainbow etc. ...these were just great songs!

I saw him in the mid to late 90's at the small club in Portland Oregon called the Roseland and I must say it was unlike anything I have ever seen, the only thing that has come close to it was Steve Mores with DP on DIO's KTD tour, that was killer too.

In reality, Malmsteen is overrated, Vai and Satriani both can play as fast as he can, and can play significantly different styles as well, they are just superior guitar players to Yngwie. Comparing Malmsteen and Blackmore is harder, because while Yngwie is obviously more technically proficient, Blackmore is a much better songwriter, so its rather hard to pick just one.

Oh, and if you want to see absolute technical perfection, go listen to Michael Angelo Batio, he plays along the same lines as Yngwie, but is faster, and can play more complicated songs.
