Boxhed:
“Alot of times I overlook peoples talents becuase of the kind of person they are.”
I always wonder why listeners are not capable of disassociating the alleged or real problems with the men-musicians from their listening enjoyment.
“To me Richie Blackmoore comes off as an asshole and has to always have the attention of everyone at all times.”
“I mean it seems to me that he always tries to be a front man even at the cost of keeping a band together.”
Could you explain to me why Ritchie comes off to you as an “asshole”?
As to the second part of your sentiment, it is to the contrary. Ritchie has always been a self-effacing band member, a shy, modest, insecure man. In Deep Purple he was always in the shadow of Ian Gillan and other singers.
Rainbow was his band, he was its leader. In spite of that he was never pushing himself into the spotlight.
Overall, Ritchie has never been a popularity-hog in contrast to such shameless self-promoters as Eric Clapton, and to a lesser extent, Jimmy Page. This is just one of the reasons why lesser guitarists like these two, plus Jimmy Hendrix and Jeff Beck have been (probably) more popular than he has.
“In Ritchies case his fan base I believe is mostly Guitar enthusist not your run of the mill pop fans.”
I agree with you. Only people with discriminating taste are capable of appreciating the greatness/uniqueness of Ritchie’s; not “your run of the mill pop fans.”
Feverdreams:
“Blackmore hasn't, he still plays the same style as he always has, love him as I may.”
Ritchie’s style has ALWAYS been changing/evolving. Compare his playing style in the early 70s, to Rainbow’s, to D.P’s again, to Rainbow’s of the 90s.
Brotor & KillTheKing:
I am happy I am not alone in understanding how far ahead of other rock guitarists Ritchie has been.
Drain you:
“Craig Goldy is the best, he defeats all the other guitarists! No doubt about it!”
Could you explain why you think so? |

I´ll have to go for Ritchie. Not easy to pick up just one name of those talents. Started listening to harder rock music a long time ago mostly because of the collaboration of Ritchie and Ronnie and though I nowadays spend most of my time with more extreme metal I still find this partnership unbeaten.
Whether his playing style has changed or not the music he writes still seems to be built on the same basis. I mean that listening to Blackmore´s Night it isn´t so hard to imagine Ronnie´s voice or Cozy´s drums on certain tracks. Especially hearing them live. Something that Rainbow reunion could have done (only in a bit heavier way)?
And speaking of assholes. Somehow I can´t seem to be able not find the word asshole synonymous with Vivian. Still like what he did with Ronnie though.
Tony, Vivian, Craig, Doug, they´re all great. But the two, Ritchie and Tony are the most important considering the development of heavy metal/rock. |

| I'd have to go with Goldy or Tony Iommi (even Steve Edwards of Elf deserves some reconission in my books). |

| The best guitarist he has worked with is of course Blackmore, but Goldy is best for the band DIO.I also think Tracy is very underrated. Can´t you people hear how great he is on Strange Highways? |

That Tracy G almost ruin Dio. He was OK in Strange Highways with some good songs, but Angry Machines was WORST!
Inferno was DISASTER! I remember hearing Tracy do early Dio stuff and feeling SICK!
Ritchie is probably better player than Iommi, but I think Dio and Iommi best suit each other. |

Yet another TOUGH question!
I picked Ritchie Blackmore.
Vivian Campbell and Craig Goldy would be my next choices. |

| As far as most technical hands down Doug Aldrich. Most popular Tony and Ritchie. I think Vivian was the man back in the day but Doug has all the tools to be one of the greatest. |

I love the Vivian Campbell era. He had the talent to be mentioned in the same breath as the great names in rock guitar. However, he has stated recently that he hates metal and hard rock and that he didnt even like it when he was playing with Dio. So that rules him out.
Blackmore, however, is head and shoulders above the rest. A pioneer both in guitar and composition. I was lucky enough to see Rainbow many times and the Ronnie, Ritchie and Cozy version provided me with some of the greatest live performances I have ever seen. Ritchie is the best improviser, the most enigmatic, the best showman, the most versatile and has the longest career spread across 3 hugely successful bands.

No. Without Ritchie invting Ronnie to start Rainbow, Ronnie's career maight not have taken off like it did. Ritchie gave Ronnie the "big break" he needed. |
