Ok, I'm sure its going to be a great DVD and I'm really enjoying the CD, but Ronnie being faultless? Come on, lets not be delusional. I think he sounds terrific, but I'm not going to kid myself and say he's without the occasional sour note or raspy voice here and there. He's not his young self anymore, that's for damn sure. But, like I said, he still sings damn good and still has an impressive range.

Okay...some of you folks may not know this Dio gig in London was near the end of a very long tour in Europe....not just a couple of nights....but Dio was all over Europe....and for him to come to London after such a extremely arduous tour and perform like he did in London to me Mr Dio gave a faultless performance....he held onto notes...when others would have given up....his vocals cords must have had some punishment but he went for every note and he got them....I don't know how old he is but to give 100 per at each gig.....and he did must have been exhausting for him...so with that kind of effort....Mr Dio was faultless.

Thank God. Evil Or Divine had a great setlist, and terrific sound, but abysmal video quality. In fact, it was almost as if it were crappy on purpose....

Ok, so I'll cut Ronnie some slack, this cd was after a long tour, but let me ask you this - were they tuning everything down a whole step the entire Master of the Moon tour, or was it just for the "Evening With Dio" shows?

First of all, a big thank you to Mr. Ronnie James Dio and all his cohorts for giving us fans a solid testament of the greatest Dio album of all time. The Holy Diver live show is absolutely fantastic both live on stage and on a DVD.

Ronnie James Dio, as usual, gives his absolute 100 % performance of top quality, top technique and over-the-top power.

Doug Aldrich really lives within the soul of the songs, he delivered an absolutely professional and faithful performance!

Rudy Sarzo is probably the best, most energetic and most flamboyant bassist Dio has ever had in his ranks...

Simon Wright - there couldn't be a more powerful and appropriate drummer for Dio, even Vinnie Appice with his usually one bass drum would have hard time to get to the same level with Simon...

My special thanks for Scott Warren for his fantastic keyboard performance. Tarot Woman and Gates Of Babylon had the original spirit and musical scenery, it was just wonderful!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
This new Holy Diver Live DVD acts as a most appropriate remembrance from the era I experienced Dio live for the first few times. You know, my very first Dio show was on 18th of July 2004 at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival in Hellsinki. My second Dio show was on 10th of June 2005 at the Sauna Open Air Metal Festival in Tampere. My third and latest Dio show was at the Pavillion Arena in Jyväskylä on 9th of December 2005, when Asia and Uriah Heep opened for Dio. So this new DVD, recorded on 22nd of October at Astoria, London is from between my second and third Dio shows, I couldn't be more happy of having a testament from that particular era of Dio's career.

What really made me shiver while I was watching this awesome DVD was the fact that in Jyväskylä the Dio line-up and the overall look and performance of the group was exactly the same as on the DVD. I'm not talking about every conceivable detail etc., but I can safely say that when I watch the DVD, it's as if I was back in Jyväskylä experiencing the show just as it is on the disc. Of course, the setlist in Jyväskylä was a bit different than on the DVD:

1. Tarot Woman
2. Voodoo
3. The Eyes

4. Stand Up And Shout
5. Holy Diver
6. Gypsy
7. Caught In The Middle
8. Don't Talk To Strangers
9. Rainbow In The Dark

10. Gates Of Babylon
11. Heaven And Hell
12. Man On The Silver Mountain / Catch The Rainbow / Long Live Rock 'N' Roll
13. The Last In Line
14. We Rock

The show on the DVD began exactly in the same way as in Jyväskylä - Tarot Woman! The progression of the DVD show was just the same: one Rainbow song, one Sabbath song, one Dio song and then the Holy Diver set. As you can see, Dio had to shorten the Holy Diver set just a bit because of the curfew time, but it was still magical! And when they played Gates Of Babylon and Heaven And Hell consecutively, I was floored! The London show didn't include The Last In Line, but in Jyväskylä we had it!

The main thing is:

This new DVD gives me such powerful vibes because of it's closeness and similar content. As I said, this DVD is a perfect reference to the era I experienced Dio for the first few times.

My points for the DVD: 10/10 and 5 full stars!

P.S. Luckily they didn't show the setlist on the startup menu screen, I could enter the show as if it was a real deal on location!

Ok, so I'll cut Ronnie some slack, this cd was after a long tour, but let me ask you this - were they tuning everything down a whole step the entire Master of the Moon tour, or was it just for the "Evening With Dio" shows?

Down-tuning...in musical terms... Its when the guitar and bass tune their instruments down so that the music is in a lower key, without having to change the way they play it. Where they normally play an A minor chord, its now a G minor chord, or whatever, depending how low they down-tuned.

In the past, Dio always tuned down 1/2 a step. I imagine this was to save unnecessary strain on Ronnie's voice, so the high notes weren't SO high, plus modulating the key down only 1/2 step is barely noticeable to the untrained ear.

The band on Holy Diver Live play down a whole step. This should be noticeable to just about anyone who just listened to the studio albums. Now, lots of bands sometimes do this for different reasons. Judas Priest, back in the Ripper Owens days, tuned down a whole step just to sound heavier and give a more contemporary feel to the old classics (being that almost all newer bands play down-tuned). Metallica has for some time now tuned down 1/2 step, probably for the same reason. Standard tuning is just so "old school".

But I'm wondering if Dio is tuned down for the same reason, or if it is to help Ronnie even more and keep him from having to push his range to much?

I think that may be it partly. But the fact that the high notes aren't as high, means the low ones are lower, and it isn't easy to sing low either, is it?

On the other hand, it may be something totally different. Changing vocal ability can be got round in other ways. Eg. Clement Burke from Blondie uses an electric drum kit which gives him control over the volume to help Debbie Harry who's voice isn't as powerful as it ued to be. They are still a brilliant live band though!!

Not being a musican.....thanx ''The Nomad''I am sure Dio sound has changed...over the years....I have seen him about 10 or 11 times now.....But I don't think much...I agree with Coop....maybe more in the low range...but the thing is with Dio.....he is a singer...and not a shouter...I am sure you will love the dvd.The newer songs...like Master of the moon and The Eyes....are perfect live....I really do hope Dio gets them on live cd or dvd....becoz they are too good to be forgotten about.

I saw them in Manchester. It was loud - in fact my right ear was deaf for 3 days. But, if the venue is small the soundwaves are shorter and affect your hearing more. The same volume in a big room won't make you go deaf afterwards. But I'm sure microphones in front of the amps doesn't bode well for hearing!

Holymagica - what extra encore song did you get?
