|
|
"Of note, another track was cooked up for Sacred Heart. Never Again made it all the way to the mixing, but was then nixed. In April of 2003, it reared its head again... 'We have an interesting song we're doing for the Children of the Night charity,' noted Bain at the time. 'We have a song, the commercial aspect - that we had done for Sacred Heart, that I put forth, that Ronnie thought was too commercial, and we didn't do it. And now it's raised its head again, because now we're doing this song for Children of the Night, and it's called Never Again. And you'll see what I mean, when you hear that one (laughs). Here's a hit song that we didn't do. It could've been on an album back in 1984, which would've been a big help. It didn't go on, and it might sound a little dated now, but the song was great back then.'"
Does anyone know anything about this song? |

Never Again was a Holy Diver out-take.
According to the liner notes from the 2005 Mercury/Rock Candy remaster of Holy Diver:
"Ronnie, brought up on sci-fi novels and the works of Sir Walter Scott, instinctively knew what his fans would be waiting for, and in Holy Diver --the song and the album-- he gave it to them straight from the source; a soupçon of Stargazer, a hint of Heaven And Hell and an extra-large dose of Long Live Rock 'N' Roll, all sprinkled liberally with Cornish myth and stirred with King Arthur's own teaspoon...
Only Rainbow In The Dark swims in different, somewhat calmer waters -- a more accessible take on the Dio approach vocalled by Ronnie pretty much on the spot, and a song that almost didn't make the record. Seriously! The frontman was concerned that it might not be entirely at ease alongside Sixteenth Century Greensleeves, Children Of The Sea, etc., the more epic stuff in his repertoire, but the other band members persuaded him to let it live; they were less successful pleading the case for Never Again, however, which Ronnie instantly consigned to a dark and lonely dungeon where even now it continues to be shackled. We shall not see it (or its like) again..." |

Here is something that Ronnie said about it in 2004:
“It dates back to the early days of Dio, and was initially written by myself, guitarist Vivian Campbell, bassist Jimmy Bain and drummer Vinnie Appice. But we never finished it,” says Ronnie. “Jimmy wrote the song in the early stages of recording the new Dio album, ‘Master Of The Moon’, and that’s when we cut it. All we need to do now is to gather a number of guest vocalists and guitarists, as we did with ‘Stars’."

If only the instruments were recorded and no vocals, get that Jorn fellow in there. He does a pretty good RJD. Release it and send the proceeds to the Children of the Night. Win-Win. _________________ And all the lighthouses, their beams converge, to guide me home

I see two readings out of these sources:
1.
There is a fully recorded version from 1985. Bain said in the initial quote that it was done for Sacred Heard and made it to the mixing and then got axed.
2.
There is a new version of the song dating from the Master of the Moon sessions with only basic tracks recorded, like Ronnie stated in the interview I gave a link to above |

I'd rather keep it as an instrumental. Mr. Lande is a pretty fine singer, but he can't even lick Ronnie's boots. I accept no substitutes. _________________ Carry high the torch given by the Angel

I agree.
Jorn is pretty good in his own right but covering Dio? Meh. _________________ "Too many flames, with too much to burn, and life's only made of paper." - RJD |

Exactly.. And well, it would be logical that it should be released under the name of DIO, and I refuse to have a DIO release without Ronnie's voice on it. He is the only singer there is for this band.
I do like Jorn's solo albums and all, but I wasn't quite convinced by the covers I heard from him.. _________________ Carry high the torch given by the Angel

I presume that there is a version with Ronnie´s vocals recorded from the 1980s.
Here is what Jimmy said:
"Of note, another track was cooked up for Sacred Heart. Never Again made it all the way to the mixing, but was then nixed."
So another singer might not be needed. |

Would love to hear something I have not heard before from the original Dio lineup. _________________ And all the lighthouses, their beams converge, to guide me home

Generally speaking, I know it probably won't happen, but I'd love to hear all kinds of unfinished demos.
I don't know if or how that would be possible, but I'd enjoy hearing them.
I get a kick out of the creative process in stages.
I'd even like to hear rough recordings with mistakes etc. _________________ "Too many flames, with too much to burn, and life's only made of paper." - RJD |

... and there must me tons of unreleased Dehumanizer Demos of different states of quality. Judging from those demos leaked to the net years ago I presume they wrote shiploads of songs that didn´t made the album. Take into account that the reunion was announced in late 1990 and that Dehumanizer came out in June of 1992. So there was a very long period of writing in between.
Can you imagine a future album called: Black Sabbath - The Dio Demos (remastered) ??? I say, well a man can dream ... |

Also, there must be recordings of Tony Martin coming back in to do songs as well. That would be something I'd love to hear as well. _________________ So if a stranger sees you
