There are very few songs that I can clearly remember hearing for the first time. Holy Diver is one of them.

I discovered it as a teenager in the late 80's. At the time, I wasn't familiar with Sabbath, I'd never heard of Dio, and didn't really know much of any Metal at all. (Heck, my familiarity with Rock in general was pretty weak; I was only beginning to discover it.)

The song Holy Diver came on the radio-- and blew me away. I was hooked. It was definitely a "where have you BEEN all my life!" moment.

(I was hoping beyond hope for something-slightly-better than yet-another-generic-top40-song-about-a-love-affair-or-breakup. And I got-- Holy Diver. Definitely memorable-- like discovering that the prize at the bottom of your box of cracker-jacks is a handcrafted 24k gold ring.)

Popped this in for the first time this summer since Dio's passing.

As the album that followed 'Mob Rules,' I was surprised to hear the tone as a little weak.

Vinnie's playing is markedly Vinnie. However, I hear the drums as far more punchy tone wise on Mob Rules.

The singing style is major Dio growl. Unquestionably a classic Dio album, probably his most memorable solo record.

I LOVE
Stand up and Shout
Invisible
Shame on the Night
Don't Talk to Strangers

I waited all summer to pop this in. I procrastinated b/c my cd was autographed by Dio. I wound up putting the cd in a blank case and keeping the autographed artwork in my home. I was afraid to bring it to the car!

Of Dio's solo albums, this is probably the very first one should pick up, followed by Last in Line, Lock Up The Wolves, Strange Highways.

I've never much liked Sacred Heart that followed. Dream Evil was ok, a bit too glam metal to me. Still, love the sound of Dio's voice on Dream Evil.

"Shame On The Night" is my favorite Dio-song at all!

"Rainbow In The Dark" and "Don't Talk To Strangers" are other best songs... For "Holy Diver" - what to say? The history says more than me - classic Dio performance!

The last couple days Stand up and Shout has gotten me so pumped that it was practically unprecedented.

The energy on that song is worlds more aggressive than ever came out of Dio before, even on the previous Black Sabbath material.

It made me bonkers I was so pumped up.

I grown up and changed my mind, today i can honestly admit that my favourite album of Dio is The Last in Line, not Holy diver...

HD has some classics songs on, one of the greatest ever: Holy Diver, Don't talk to strangers, Rainbow in the dark, but it also has a weak truck, filler- Caught in the middle, the last in line does not have song like that and it's imo better LP...

what do you think Dio fans??

I thought Caught in the Middle was a great tune, not filler at all. The whole album is strong top to bottom, surely people can see that.

I'd have to choose Holy Diver, Last in Line is perfect too, but Holy Diver has two of my favorite Dio tracks, Gypsy and Shame on the Night.

I heard that in lyrics of "Invisible" Ronnie sings about poor children in 1st & 2nd verses, and sings about himself in 3rd verse.
Is that correct ???

Also he often sings about poor chilldren and really cares about them and make a huge contribution to those foundation.
(Maybe Craig Goldy is one ot them...I thought so by reading his latest interview)
Then I have wondered whether Ronnie himself had such a experience or not.

Please let me know if somebody knows about this.

Both are very good indeed.

I remember that 'The Last in Line' the actual song was my very first introduction to Dio.

The album as a whole is excellent but still my preference is Holy Diver. Shame on the Night was amazing.

Here's some trivia for ya - In the US LiL actually beat HD to platinum status by two years (LiL 02/03/1987 & HD 03/21/1989)
Previously they were both certified gold status on 09/12/1984
