That makes me feel so old. I saw them supporting Saxon (The Eagle Has Landed Tour in 82?) at the Edinburgh Playhouse. I was a young and innocent 13 year old, and the one thing I really remember about it was them dragging someone out of the crowd (okay, they didn't have to drag too hard) and walking him round on all fours like a dog using his scarf as a lead, much to the amusement of 3000 roaring lunatics. Happy days...
HM, was that you on the other end of the scarf? |

Stu that man was me.....here is the evidence
Edinburgh Playhouse...the best days of my life, where spent there.
Stu totally off topic, was you ever at the Playhouse for a gig with Bernie Marsden's band Alaska, Spider[sort of like Status Quo] and a band called Glasgow, I am sure the lead singer had a ''Stookie'' on his leg that night.I also not sure about this but Mama's Boys could have been on the billing,I was so drunk that night, I have forgotten
Its been bugging me for ages was there 4 bands on the bill or 3 that night.
Found this great website with Spider stuff....

Ps, Did you ever go to the Nite Club on top floor of the Playhouse or the Spiders Web. |

That's him! Woof!
Spider - I've got the shaped picture disk for Here We Go RocknRoll. Wasn't at that gig, but I know someone who was. Haven't seen him for years - we're going back to my school days - but if we ever cross paths I'll ask him who was on the bill.
I think was only at the Nite Club once, can't remember. Was that the door beside the Playhouse box office? Or was that the one for the gay club next door?! Don't think I've ever been in the Spiders Web. That's the pub near Haymarket?
I lived in Edinburgh for a couple of years in the early 90's and occasionally went to the Venue, but never liked the vibe in there (or outside). It always felt that trouble wasn't far away. Some good shows though. One of the best was Mama's Boys and Tygertailz. Oh - mustn't forget GWAR. They were stunning. I got a few odd looks walking home that night, covered in goo, slime, and fake blood.
The Dreadnought in Bathgate was fun for a night out too.
I really loved the Playhouse, had some fantastic nights there, like Maiden with Waysted opening for them. Then they stopped hosting gigs and aimed for musicals and operas that stayed for weeks at a time. Sadly the last few gigs I saw there were spoiled by "security" starting fights and pushing people around because they could. |

Stu... The Nite Club was part of the Playhouse, its entrance was just before the main doors of Playhouse,The Nite Club part would also have bands playing as well, I remember seeing Pendragon and Nazareth upstairs, when there was no bands playing it was really just Heavy Metal music, lots of beer and scottish girls dressed in lingerie . The Gay Bar is still there
Yeah the Spider's Webb was in Haymarket, was a great place in 80s, it was wild, ''Hellfire Club'' was the name for the Heavy Metal nights,a lot of x- rated moments in there not sure about it now, they seem to play Rockabilly these days There was a Nightclub in Lothian Road that had Metal Nights as well, I remember local DJs trying to break into mainstream radio, learning their craft at these places.
The Dreadnought in Bathgate my mate's band still play there from time to time, Thin Lizzy tribute band called Black Rose, he's the singer and bass guitarist, I like the Venue alot as well, great place, remember seeing a band called River City People there before they had any chart sucess, they played a few Rolling Stones songs in their set.
As for the "security" issue that was a certain ''new'' company trying to make its mark, libel and slander laws are the main reason I am not saying anymore about them
Next time you are in Edinburgh....and you are looking for a good pint and some Metal music check out the Black Bull Tavern, in Leith Street LOVELY bar maids, the best Jukebox in Edinburgh with everything from Sabbath to Iron maiden on it.
A lot of ''famous'' artists like to have a quiet pint in there ,I remember getting very drunk with a guitar player from very well known scottish rock band last night
Planning to meet up with a guitarist from a Canadian band in two months time for a few pints in there.
There is still Metal places to go in Edinburgh but its lots of kids and pretend Metal, nothing worse than a spotty kid coming up to you and asking if you are ''the management or security''
So I keep away and stick to my Sports Bar |

Screw the libel and slander laws, they don't apply if you tell the truth! I know Rock Steady did security at the Playhouse, but it's so long ago now that I can't remember if they were the ones causing trouble or if it was the company brought in to replace them (I think the latter). I do remember a new manager at the time of the change, and saw him all puffed up to his full height of 5 feet 0 inches, walking through the crowd at a Megadeth gig with a 20 stone gorilla each side. I swear this is true, he was pointing randomly at people in the crowd, saying "him, him", etc and his goons would either punch them or twist an arm up their backs and carry them out for no reason. I was pinned against the wall by the throat on the way in that night with my feet off the floor while they searched me, sworn at, and threatened with a kicking when they found a deadly weapon (a felt tip pen). The soundcheck ran late that night, so the security at the bottom of the stairs wouldn't let anyone into the auditorium and the bar and stairwell were jammed full. The security guys at the top of the stairs were still shoving people down into the crowd below. And I mean really shoving. Anyone who protested was thrown out. We were convinced it was a deliberate attempt to start a riot and use that as an excuse to stop hosting gigs there. Scum.
On a cheerier note, lets play "guess the celebrity drinking buddy".
Was the Scottish guitarist Jimmy Murieson of Nazareth fame?
And is the Canadian guitarist called Alex? There's a Canadian band playing the SECC in Glasgow soon... |

Ha! Couldn't resist suggesting Rush - they're always the first Canadian band that spring to anyone's mind.
I'm not a big fan of Primal Scream, apart from Country Girl (?) which is a great song. I'm not normally one for getting starstruck either. I've met loads of bands and don't usually bother getting autographs, although I always ask for a guitar pick to add to the collection.
Would have replied before now, but had a busy weekend with a friends stag day. My arms are still sore after go-karts on Saturday. If it had been up to me I'd have arranged it so we all went out for a few beers before we raced the karts - that would have been even more fun.
Great day though - topped off by Hearts beating Rangers! Hope the Hibbies make it an Edinburgh double midweek, and not just for Hearts benefit. I really want Hibs to stay up and St Midden to get relegated. No way Hearts will win the league, but it's nice to dream while it lasts. Remember that this time last year Hibs were battling the Old Firm, and Hearts were slowly dragging themselves out of a relegation battle. |
