I'll have to work on my top ten, but nice list HM. Wow, it was an excellent year for records/metal. I was in 10th grade, just starting to listen and it was album after album.

Mean Streak didn't get enough attention and it is an excellent album. they got so poppy after that.

Okay folks, the list is records I bought in 1983, thats why there is no Metallica Smile I was put off them when I heard there cover of ''Am I Evil?" Confused
There cd lacked so many things but most of all, it lacked substance and any musical quality, I am not a fan of Thrash metal.
I am proud to say, I don't have any of there records in my collection and never will.
And as for Black Sabbath's ''Born Again'', I only care about Sabbath with DIO, never been interested in any other vocalist,I can still remember all of the negative reviews about the record back in 1983, it was ripped apart by the UK music press also, Ozzy saying that "Born Again is the best album Black Sabbath recorded after my departure is enough for me to hate it Exclamation
But I love Ian Gillan.

Hard to make a list only from 1983.

I think I can get a top 9 at least.

9. AC/DC Flick of the Switch

8. Thin Lizzy - Thunder and Lightning

7. Savatage - Sirens

6. Y and T - Mean Streak

5 Dokken - Breaking the Chains

4. Iron Maiden - Piece of MInd

3 Accept - Balls to the Wall

2 Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil

1. Dio - Holy Diver

That is all I can pull out . Def Leppard had a good album, Pyromania. While it was more poppy than High and Dry, it still retained some hard rock feel. It was their last good album of the 1980s for me. So if I had a 10, it would be that, I guess.

Mean Streak got a lot attention in the UK back then.
Many times Y & T was on the same bill as Whitesnake,I remember one of the best shows ever was Gary Moore, Whitesnake and Y & T in Glasgow back in 2003.
Never known a band to be so heavy and better than their studio recordings.

I got into Metallica with the following three albums, and then hated them after the went commercial with the Black Album. Kill Em All was a low budget pour sounding album, but got them started just the same. HM, knowing your musical taste somewhat, I get that you would not be into them, but as an angry young American in the Early 80s when life wasnt great, unemployment was way up (like now) and at the time no hope for any real future, Thrash Metal gave us a way to get out the anger and frustration we had at the time. I still love those early Metallica albums along with Anthrax, Exodus........

By the way your future is what you make it, and thats why I love Ronnie, he never let us forget how to Dream!

alitivity Smile

I do like one song....''Turn The Page'' there cover of this classic song is really good and the visuals from director Jonas Åkerlund, he did there "Whiskey in the Jar" have a huge impact on the song's lyrics.I will admit it was not until afterwards did I find out about Ginger Lynn's career Embarassed I thought she was a mainstream actress Laughing

Things where good in the 80s in my neighbourhood, lots of jobs and money around.
When I did have some anger and frustration to get rid, I would be listening to Accept,Motörhead or Raven.

My friend, why did Script for a Jester's Tear by Marillion not travel so well in North America?
Was it just too British or was it becoz no one could touch the likes of Rush or Kansas back then.
For me I was there at the start, when they just played in small pubs and clubs, what I liked the most, was the sound and tone of the guitars and of course Fish's lyrics.
Here is a song for Al....great guitar work here....

HM,

I knew bringing Def Leppard into the Dio forum would bring some flack, but I did note that while it was more poppy than High and Dry, it did have some notable tunes. And this was their farewell album for me, as once Hysteria came out, they were a different band altogether. Too bad. They could really rip if they wanted to.

They are finally doing some of their older stuff in concert now from High and Dry. Never thought I'd see them doing "Hit and Run in this century.

Yes, Y & T put on a great show. Saw them on that tour with someone, may have been the Whitesnake grouping you mentioned. Too bad for them, too. "Summertime Girls" was a far cry from the Mean Streak album songs.

@HM, if you like Sabbath and Gillan than you might want to give Born Again a try. Gillan's screaming is unearthly. Certaintly both together at their evilest. It's just one dirty sounding record. I'll admit I didn't like it at first listen, but I've come to really enjoy it now. I think the other eras of Sabbath need to be given a fair chance, they all produced good music, but just cause Oz or Dio wasn't on them they get overlooked even though it has some darn good tunes.

Sounds cool! I actually never heard of them before, so I couldnt tell you why they didnt break here. America is a weird place, its all about who the Record comanies decide to push here. Even Deep Purple and Rainbow get very little recognition here and they were huge around the world. I never could figure it all out. I guess thats why my career ended 17 yrs ago. Of course I'm back with NEVERMET!!!!! Got some great stuff coming your way very soon!
