Bob Daisley let go of this classic footage recorded just before
the release of "Long Live Rock and Roll". A very young Dio and band.

Classic Rainbow with Ronnie Dio - - http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/News/dio-in-rainbow-0830/

Hope link works.

Jeffrey

Never saw that Gates of Babylon one. I think I saw the LA Connection the other day on Dio's FB page.

I love this stuff.

Thank you for posting.

The more rare the footage, usually the more interested I am.

only one problem with the story that goes along with it. I hate when reporters use the term arguably. if its arguable why say it, or at least say its an opinion. When Ronnie was at his peak is definitely a debatable issue, and differs from fan to fan. Rainbow fans love that period, but no more than the Sabbath and Dio fans love their periods in Ronnie's career.

I personally believe he peaked over and over again, and when his voice matured he changed he adapted and continued to put out great sounding vocals.

This is an extra track, as well as Gates of Babylon and LA connectionon, on the Rainbow Live in Munich 1977 DVD. I believe they were filmed in a European TV studio and the band were overdubbed with a recording (not sure of the technicalities) - but of course Ronnie refused to mime so he sang live. If you don't have this DVD you must get it - Ronnie's voice is wonderful, especially on Catch the Rainbow and Mistreated. Interesting as well to see him come back on stage at the end with a cigarette in his hand - and then start to sing at the wrong microphone!

I LOVE that DVD!! Seeing him smoking always makes me giggle. The good old days when the cool kids smoked, eh? Laughing

Definitely this. His vocals on The Devil You Know impress me in a completely different way than his vocals with Rainbow. As his voice changed with age, instead of fighting it, he ran with it and kept pushing himself in new directions.

I think of his changing as growth. He went through many different eras, and grew to make different music all along the way.

I listen to the last track on The Devil You Know and get goose bumps. It's a completely different style from any of his early work. All I know is that I watch some of his live performances with Rainbow and I'm blown away by the performance. It was gold medal olympian historic musician stuff.

I have observed Dio's tone and range change throughout his life. It also sounds very different depending on the style, or perhaps whether he was recording analog or digital. I like Dio's early work and literally also his last musical accomplishment with Black Sabbath(h&h).

He did indeed peak over and over again.
