|
|
A classical voice instructor, completely unfamiliar with Metal, is asked for her opinion of tracks from five different Metal vocalists. Unsurprisingly, Ronnie gets top marks:
http://www.invisibleoranges.com/2010/07/ask-a-real-musician-5-classic-male-metal-singers/
“The first two guys [Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie James Dio] are so impeccable that they’re each in their own way presenting a manifesto on how to sing well, irrespective of musical genre”
(After listening to Falling off the Edge of the World) "This is another very fine singer. His voice is so naturally resonant – he reminds me of Freddie Mercury. Like the first singer, he performs with perfect legato, clear diction, and a consistent, organic vibrancy. He arranges his resonance space to create a shallow snarl without setting up any resistance for his breath. You can tell how healthy his delivery is from the way he moves in and out of brief moments of harmony with the other tracks with impeccable intonation."
(On a side note: she's also very impressed by Bruce Dickinson's classic scream at the beginning of Number of the Beast).
The five tracks she was given were with (in the order they are presented in the article): Bruce Dickinson, Ronnie James Dio, King Diamond, Ozzy, and Rob Halford. |

Ronnie and Freddie Mercury are often the two that come to mind when I ponder the best singers of all time. _________________ "Too many flames, with too much to burn, and life's only made of paper." - RJD |

| She should have reviewed Geoff Tate and Michael Kiske rather than Ozzy and King Diamond. |

She didn't choose who to review-- the blogger sent her five tracks without telling her who the artists were (and she was unfamiliar enough with the genre not to recognize the tracks/singers).
I'd love to hear her take on Geoff Tate and Michael Kiske, but it was also interesting to hear her take on Ozzy and King Diamond (actually, her take on King Diamond was one of the more interesting of the reviews, just because it was harder to guess what she would think of him than the others.) |

She should review more singers in the same way.
I wonder if she'd take suggestions? _________________ "Too many flames, with too much to burn, and life's only made of paper." - RJD |

If you look at the comments, there's already about 100 suggestions-- though I can think of quite a few I'd like to add to the list.
I wonder what she'd think of Jari Mäenpää, for instance? Or, for that matter, I'd love to hear her take on Nergal. |
