I am curious, do you know the name of the actual tracks that resemble the holy diver material? _________________ "Too many flames, with too much to burn, and life's only made of paper." - RJD |

i don't know very much about that, for example I've heard that "Rainbow in the dark" is reworked version of "Lady Marion" by sweet savage, and the riff from "Caught in the middle" is also from Sweet Savage song called "Straight to the heart"...
but i haven't heard them and i don't know anything more, someone wants help??
I've heard that is one of the reasons of conflict between Ronnie and Campbell...
someone could tell me more please?? _________________ So live for today

I did some quick research on it and it doesn't look like there is much out there on this "Lady Marion" song. I found one website that has a cd reissue of their first single, and it claims the song was written in 1980. The song "Straight through the Heart" didn't come out until a single released in 1984, a year after Holy Diver. This seems to be the story with a lot of the songs that people are making these claims about.
Vivian Campbell left Sweet Savage while they were still pretty young. I mean there was only a demo and a couple singles, there was nothing major. My guess is that when he joined Dio, he took with him some of the songs or riffs Sweet Savage had been working on and presented them as new material to Dio.
I haven't been able to find any audio samples of the Lady Marion song online yet ...I'm interested in hearing just how similar these two songs are _________________ you put your hope into the sky

From wikipedia:
After a year long break, Sweet Savage decided to reform but without Campbell and Fleming. Ian "Speedo" Wilson joined Sweet Savage on guitar and the band recorded a one off single with vocalist Robert Casserley(guest vocalist), 'Straight Through The Heart' was released on Crashed Records. |
..so that song was actually recorded after Viv left. That's why I think Viv kind of like took the songs they were working at the time he left and stuff like that ..or maybe these were songs that were already finished when he left and they were just playing them live at the time.
...but I guess until I can find a comment from one of the band members, we can never really know for sure _________________ you put your hope into the sky

This is a really fascinating subject..........thanks for bringing this to our attention. I doubt we will ever know the full story but there in no question he bought that riff to Dio. Wonder if there are other such obvious ones.......time to search the web! _________________ Stand up and Shout!!!!! |

Yes, the straight through the heart riff is soooooo 'Caught in the Middle.'

Caught in the middle is better of course.
I couldn't find that Lady Marion on youtube which surprised me a little. I get a kick out of the comparison.
I also once compared Randy Rhodes pre Ozzy stuff with a few things he did with Ozzy. There was much more in that music which was Randy for which Ozzy gets credit for as the main face.
Interesting stuff...would def like if someone can post that lady marion track. _________________ "Too many flames, with too much to burn, and life's only made of paper." - RJD |

i found that:

, here's an important part:
"The second thing Viv seemed intent on mentioning was some writing claims concerning the first Dio release, Holy Diver. Particularly, Vivian claims that HE in fact wrote almost HALF of the established album.
Further claims were made that Rainbow in the Dark was actually a Sweet Savage tune called Lady Marion; Invisible was another Sweet Savage tune called Queen’s Legend; and of course the one we are all familiar with already, Caught In The Middle riff initially originating from the Sweet Savage tune Cloak & Dagger."
and a link to cloak and dagger:
