'Nobody Wants To Actually Purchase Music Anymore'

Rob Zombie has told AOL's Noisecreep that the full-album format has become impractical, forcing him and other artists to think of new ways to get their music out to the masses.
"I like the thought of the band writing, say, one song a month and putting it up there," Zombie said. "Say we've been on tour for six or eight months and we don't have time to stop and make a whole album. It would be cool to put out two or three songs we've written and then keep going just to keep it energized. And truthfully, when you make a new album ... you go, 'OK here's 11 new songs, five of which we'll never play live. And here's the two or three singles that will always be in the set.' So it could just be a different way to do business that's really sort of like the old way of doing things.
"Back in the '50s and '60s people weren't making albums, they were pressing singles and then an album was basically a collection of all the singles."
"The record industry is dying," Zombie told Noisecreep. "I think they dropped the ball a long time ago and they're never going to recover from it. Everybody loves music, everybody's always gonna want to make music and listen to it, but nobody wants to actually purchase music anymore. That's the trick. So for me, it's a weird time because the music scene is alive and well. It's just the music buying public is not. A year from now, I don't even know if they'll be pressing CDs anymore. Or if they do, stores won't even bother carrying 'em."

I want to buy music...I don't believe in High Street cd shops, can't wait for them to go to the wall to be honest, sick of the prices Metal fans pay for their cds in these places.
Why should Metal fans pay a premium rate for their music while fans of Lady Ga Ga and crap like that get there cds at a discount. Mad
The high street and record shops have conned us for too long now!
I get most of my cds from Russia...they are no different from the ones you get in the shops over here apart from the ''Not for Sale outside the Russian Federation'' at the bottom, I normally get around about 5 at a time at £3 a cd.Of course if I don't want to wait for them clearing customs, I get them from Amazon instead again alot cheaper than the High Street.

How much are you folks paying for your metal cds?

It's not that I don't want to buy anything in album format, it's that there isn't much WORTH buying in album format.. Give me something with more than 3 decent songs, that doesn't sound like it was edited on a Hewlitt Packard, and a real singer that doesn't require (painfully obvious) pitch correction, and I am first in line for the disc....

Oh, and don't sound like you just heard the song before yours on the radio and tried to rewrite it.. Get off your lazy duff and be freakin creative....

I tend to buy mp3 albums rather than physical albums.

Unless I only like one or two tracks, in which case I just buy those. But for my "core" musical purchases-- e.g. "the kind of thing I usually listen to" and my favorite bands -- I'm biased towards buying the whole album. When I go further afield from my usual tastes, I get pickier and am more likely to cherry-pick songs.

On the other hand, I run across a lot of stuff that isn't available for legal mp3 purchase, and so then I need to order the CD (usually used, since no-mp3-version generally means out-of-print).

At this point, my physical CD collection consists primarily of things not available for legal download. (Or that wern't when I purchased it-- a couple of out-of-print CDs that I tracked down came back into print and were made available on iTunes).

I still buy cds, I would much rather have a hard copy of something rather than just the mp3's. I think it's rather silly the problems record stores have had. Just go buy the albums people. Look for good deals and you will find them.

What album stores? They've been gone for years. They vanished long before I gave up on them; finally had to realize they were gone & move on.

(And they stopped carrying Metal a long time before they vanished. I think the last time I saw a store with any kind of a Metal selection at all was in 1988.)

In the uk the independent music stores are basically gone and the chains are selling everything for computers, ipods, t shirts oh yes and some music amongst the dvds. Its a shame how its gone. I do go in occassionally ang get the odd bargain but mostly buy cds online as its cheaper. I dont buy mp3 as i like the cd so i can convert to whatever i want. But dome decent new material would be very welcome

Theirs still a few places that sell used cds and the like, but they don't specialize in the cds, so there are dvds and books and other stuff their too.

There is a "mom and pop" music store near me that I go to once in awhile. I know this is old timey, but they will special order something, and I would rather give them my money that some chain or the like. Sometimes, just for the fun of it, I'll go to FYE in the mall (I usally avoid the mall like the plague. I only go when I need jeans and/or underwear!) and look at their teeny tiny metal section. It's about the size of my desk at work. One of the guys who works there is a part time DJ at one of the Top 40 stations in town, and he always asks if he can help. So I throw some name out there just to watch him freak out a little. I know, I'm mean! Twisted Evil He's really not all that helpful. Sometimes if I find anything worthwhile, he acts like he knows all about them while he rings me up by speaking in general terms like "Yeah...they're heavy, cool, etc." I know he's first and foremost a salesman, but I miss the days when you could actually talk music with somebody, which is why I like the mom and pop place I mentioned earlier. It's dark, loud, and run by old hippies. If they don't know anything about the group whose music you're buying, they'll ask you, and interact with you. It's very cool.

I do order from Amazon...it's easy. As far as MP3's go....I'll download a song here and there. There are a few bands that I just can't commit to a whole album of.

There is just something about having the CD in my hands, and reading the liner notes while it's playing for the first time.

I'm with you Stargazer. For the most part, I will still buy CD's either from the internet or stores. But some CD's are so bad, and don't want to buy the whole thing for 1 or 2 songs. So I will get them off of Amazon for $1 each.

But I do still like sitting with the new CD case reading the liner notes, who they thank, looking at their pictures. You don't get that on mp3's.

I want my music on cd's! There is nothing like having the physical booklet to watch at while listening to the music, and even sing a long the lyrics with my heavily out of tune voice when nobody can hear me..

And it looks nice to have the walls plastered by cd's and vinyls...

I am one of the few from the younger generation that buys music. (I am 19 and have grown up with internet and computers)
Many of my friends only listen to techno, rap or pop. Most of them only download music illegally, and couldn't dream of paying money for it.
I probably only have 2-3 friends of my age who buys CD's and have more than 10. I myself have a collection on around 150 albums, and I usually buy anywhere from 1-5 every month.

My local records stores have a very small selection of extreme metal, heavy metal, prog rock (the genres I usually like), so I tend to buy online directly from the labels or shops like amazon.co.uk.

It might look bad when the CD sales are dropping, but I dont think that the physical formats of albums will dissappear soon. Look at the Vinyl, which has had a comeback lately. Humans have a desire of owning things, and I dont think a list of files on a screen satisfies this need. At least not for me.

I think what we will see in the future is a lot more limited pressings and collectors items.

There are two reasons why I tend (legally purchased) virtual rather than physical for my music.

One, I'm not good with physical stuff physically. I love that Metal is keeping the vinyl format alive, and I really appreciate vinyl. But I don't own any, because I'd just leave it out in the sun by accident and melt it. Better to let it go to someone able to actually take proper care of it, but for klutzy and absent-minded me, a format that I can backup is preferable. Why risk ruining something someone else would love to have?

Two, I'm not good with physical stuff emotionally. I get very sentimentally attached to it, and then it becomes very heavy baggage. I've found it's better to put in the effort to accumulate as little as possible-- but it's a constant struggle.

Back in high-school, I loved sitting down with the physical booklet from the cassette the first time I listened to it, looking at the artwork and reading the lyrics. But my cassette collection became a huge burden, most of the cases were cracked so used music stores didn't want them (even if the tapes themselves were fine), and I ended up wearing out my favorites (there are mp3's that I find myself listening for distortion in the tape at certain points so that I can stop the player before the tape gets eaten Laughing )

So I go virtual. Album artwork becomes screensavers, desktops, and once I get around to getting stuff up on my (scarce) wallspace, I'll likely incorporate album art there. I always load the lyrics and album artwork on iTunes, so that I have them available whenever the tune plays on my iPod.

...And yet, even so, my CD collection keeps growing, because there's so much that's not available for legal digital purchase...
