Joe Elliot: Def Leppard don't get enough respect

What’s Down ’n’ Outz all about?
I opened for Mott The Hoople on their reunion show last year. The Quireboys joined me in the band as Leppard were all spread out. It was covers of all the stuff various Mott members did after they split up, songs from my childhood that I’ve adored. Now we’ve recorded the songs and are doing some shows. I’m probably the biggest Mott fan on the planet. Morrissey says he’s a bigger fan but he isn’t.

What’s happening with Def Leppard?
We’re taking a year off. I’m doing this because I have the time. After you have a hit like Hysteria and you’re signed to the corporate machine it becomes an albatross around your neck. As much as our music is anthemic rock’n’roll it’s a business at the end of the day. It’s stressful and gets harder each time you make a record. No one’s comparing this to Hysteria, it’s got nothing to do with it. It’s a refreshing change. It’s like being a teenager in a 50-year-old body.

What was it like trying to start a metal band in the punk era?
It was exciting. I was 17 when punk happened but I was still buying Queen and Thin Lizzy. We liked punk but didn’t want to be in a punk band. The first song we learned was Suffragette City. The good thing was that punk got rid of the 15minute guitar solo.

What’s been your biggest moment of rock’n’roll excess – have you ever thrown a TV out of a window?
When I was young enough to want to do something as stupid as that I couldn’t have afforded to. People who did that only did it because Keith Moon did it first. We were only getting $50 a week when we started touring so I didn’t want to get into debt paying for TVs. There are lots of great rock bands who have never thrown a TV through a window. It’s not a prerequisite. I’ve always been more into the music than the groupies, drugs or smashing up hotel rooms. I wanted to be in the biggest band in the world. And we were a couple of times. People in Britain don’t realise. We don’t get the credit we deserve in Britain.

Is it frustrating?
It’s nice to walk down Oxford Street without being recognised but then again when music magazines write about us they take the p*** because we’re not as cool as Johnny Marr, who isn’t as successful as us by a million miles. Jools Holland won’t have us on his show because we’re not cool enough.

Is that because people look down on rock?
Rock’s ploughed its own furrow for 30 years but still music magazines don’t give rock its due and still rave on about Nick Drake. How many more front covers do Paul McCartney and Morrissey need? Our album will sell more than Morrissey’s so why don’t we get the same kind of respect? There are more people than Bono and Michael Stipe to put on the cover of a magazine. Whether it’s Simon Le Bon, Gary Kemp, Bruce Dickinson or me, there are more musicians out there. It’s not just Lennon and Jim Morrison. Bands who have sold s***loads of records, whether it be us or Depeche Mode, are becoming footnotes.

What was playing with Taylor Swift like?
It was nice to visit the ‘hey diddle diddle’ territory for a while. Taylor Swift is a huge Def Leppard fan so when she was asked to do Crossroads, a music collaboration show, she said she wanted to do it with us. At that point she hadn’t had a stupid dumb rapper invade her on stage to ruin her evening, now she’s going to be more cynical which is a shame. We wanted to kick his [Kanye West’s] head in and would have done if we were there. She writes way ahead of her years. I hope she’s still doing it when she’s 50.

Okay had to open this thread again... Laughing
What a twat...the reason your band gets no respect in Britain is becoz you are a joke.
You got to earn respect.
Would Iron Maiden or Saxon be singing with Taylor Swift...never in a million years!!

Of course, I reserve the right to close this topic down if anyone says anything good about them after Pyromania Laughing Wink

I am not saying this to be mean.

I was for a while when much younger a huge Def Leppard fan. A few of their albums still hold a place in my heart. Esp, High and Dry, Pyromania and Hysteria...the album that followed Hysteria was pretty good and interesting as well, particularly because it sounded like Steve's ghost playing on there. They made beautiful work before Steve passed away.

If I may say so also, Joe Elliot sounds great on these albums, but in CONCERT HIS VOICE SUCKS ASS! I have never been impressed by his LIVE performance. I'd say he sounds downright LAZY! So does Vince from Motley Crue for that matter as well!

I was shocked to hear Dio speak like that about Vivian on tape. We don't know the whole story, but they were some harsh words. It's not something that gains respect for Dio, even if he has good reasons. Public laundry often just serves to make people look bad. It's actually overall just sad that such meanness lives on immortal in a youtube video.

I hope we know 'more' about the details of these stories some day.

I have heard from others that Vivian can be quite egotistical and mean. Then again, can't we all? I know my own ego has needed checking at certain points.

I saw Ronnie in one video, quite angry state on the tour bus, screaming about noise interrupting that wasn't that bad. I know we all have bad days. All I'm saying is that I wish these videos didn't exist. They are negative excerpts that may do too much harm to the appreciation we have of the man. I have also heard Ronnie go on very critically about some stuff that transpired with the Sabbath guys. None of the dirty laundry should be on tape, but we live in the day and age we do.

Still, Dio's comments I just found sad because it's just a mean spirit and has nothing to do whatsoever with the special things we appreciate these guys for.

I still love Def Leppard. But I always thought they completely went into decline and never truly came back.

After all, you rock stars, my dad, anybody, we're all human.

How could a singer be lazy?

I personally wouldn't want to go on stage and sound shitty, so why the lazy voice? Pshhhh!

To be fair, Dio didn't KNOW he was on tape when he said what he did about Viv and about Def Leppard. I think it was pretty shitty of the kid to intentionally ask him provocative questions while secretly capturing it on the cell-phone.

Though I've seen the page on you-tube and read what people have said about the clip various places (including mention of some nasty things Viv had previously said about Dio when Viv DID know he was "on the record"), I haven't been able to watch it, because it just doesn't feel right to do so. He had a moment of candid venting that he didn't intend to be captured for the world to see, so trying to watch it just feels like spying or evesdropping to me.

Like you said, we're all human, we all have our off days, and we've all said things that we don't want to be forever remembered for. (And most of the responses I've seen to Dio's comments have been along those lines)

Edited to Add: I confess, my dark side got a perverse pleasure out of hearing the way he slammed Def Leppard, just because of the late eighties when MTV was pretty much the only tool I had available to me to discover new music-- but I felt like if I heard "Pour Some Sugar on Me" one damn more time I was going to throw the TV out the window. (thank the gods for the Internet, so I can discover new music without having 80% of the playlist being stuff that I don't like but is omnipresent because it's what the media moguls have decided I should hear) But the part of me that enjoyed knowing about Dio's slam isn't a part of me that I should be encouraging.

So says the person who unlocked and performed thread-necromancy on a topic that hadn't been posted to in over a year, bringing it back to the very top of the forum list where it was sure to be seen Laughing

Puke puke and double puke. Pardon me if 'puke' is over the top, but the whole thing Def Leppard did with Taylor made me want to expel my lunch from mine own mouth that ate it. Hmm...I guess you could say I'm opinionated about that one. I guess it's just that heavily contrived concepts make me vomit prone from the complete and utter total lack of artistic integrity they have.

Does anyone want to defend tripe music?

I was way over the top. Sorry. It's sort of ok if I take my frustrations out on Def Leppard? yeah?

It ruins photograph. No me gusta...es verdad!
