Yes, I agree many good singers could work w/Ronnie's material if they do it in their own style.
I find perhaps my problem is that while looking for Dio covers, I am disappointed more than you'd think b/c I'm looking for a Dio replacement that does not exist. I find myself frustrated that I can't find someone who can do it right. It's because I keep looking to find Ronnie when there is no more Ronnie.
The Doors and Alice in Chains have found 'similar' sounding vocalists. Honestly, both are pretty good with the new singers. However, those are much much easier positions to fill vocally.
I just don't find many men with Ronnie's range. For a man, I have a high singing range myself, and it still falls many intervals short of Ronnie's own high notes.
When I hear the vocalist struggling to hit those high notes, whether it's me or anyone, it just sucks. Singing never sounded like a struggle for Ronnie.
Good grief, THAT NOBODY CAN SUITABLY COVER RONNIE IN RONNIE'S STYLE IS A TESTAMENT TO HIS VAST VOCAL SINGULARITY. |

You will expect me to say this what about Female singers?
One of reasons why I like female fronted metal is becoz of Ronnie James Dio, so many male vocalist don't come up to standard becoz Ronnie is the King of Heavy Metal. |

Elis' (insanely good) cover of Heaven & Hell comes to mind.
But yeah, I think a few people are being a bit premature to dismiss the idea of someone else singing RJD's songs. Who knows? Maybe it'd be nice to hear other people's takes on his music. I mean, I could see Glenn Hughes executing a new Sabbath album perfectly (In terms of sound, Fused was undeniably a prequel of sorts to Devil you Know), and Martin could probably pull off any of their Dio era stuff pretty well. The guy can still sing, and his last 2 solo albums prove that. Heck, even get Ozzy to perform After All, just because I really think he could nail the intro (and that song isn't that technically difficult to sing, so maybe someone as bottom tier as Ozzy could handle it).
Aside from that, Jorn Lande, Jeff Scott Soto, Nils Patrick Johansson; these are all vocalists who I think could pull off a lot of Dio's material.
What I'm saying, is don't just stomp your feet and pretend that the continuation of Dio's legacy would be nothing more than the debauchery of his work and a complete sacrilege against music as a whole. Tony Iommi is a man who KNOWS TALENT. If he is spearheading this thing, I have absolutely no doubt that it's going to be spectacular.
"Don't look behind, cause a tear that never dries can only make you blind." - RJD himself. |

The band Dio can never be no more. Without RJD there is no Dio. As for Heaven and Hell I feel that Geezer and Tony would not continue with this band either. I also feel they would do this out of respect for Ronnie. I would hope that they would not go back with Ozzy he has no voice left. Tony Iommi makes this statement in Radio City Music Hall dvd about how bad the Ozz fest shows were getting. I could see Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler getting together with Jorn Lande this guy does have a good voice is he RJD no way. All I can say Jorn Lande has a singing voice Ozzy has nothing! _________________ If you wish hard enough you might be surprised what awaits you at the end of the rainbow! |

No one could fill Ronnies boots but two (already mentioned on here) could do a good job.
Jorn Lande amd Tony Martin. Jorn has in fact done a tribute to Ronnie. |
Well, Jorn has been singing "Straight Through The Heart" in his live shows since 2006. As for Tony Martin, I once saw a live video of him singing ''Time Machine", and he gave a surprisingly great performance of it. |
I recently heard Jorn on the Masterplan album "Time to be a King" and was pleasantly surprized to hear shades of RJD in his singing. I too had been thinking, "This guy could probally do a fill in for H&H." No one can replace Dio, but nice to hear the resemblence in style. |
