|
|
It seems inevitible that a tribute album is destined to happen, as plans for a late summer Dio memorial 'Stand up and Shout' cancer fundraiser concert were already mentioned at Ronnie's memorial.
Personally, I have never heard any covered Dio song as good as Dio had done it.
Still, moving forward, I would rather see people trying to add new life to these songs, and keeping the legend alive than to see Dio's awesome and unique work fade into history.
What groups would you like to see cover Dio's songs?
My thoughts on who I think could cover Dio best with some dignity,
Metallica...Holy Diver, Stand Up And Shout, or Master Of The Moon
John Oliva's Pain/Savatage... All The Fools Sailed Away, or The Man Who Would Be King...This Is Your Life as last song on album
Alice Cooper... Rock-n Roll Children, or Throw Away Children
Queensryche...Rainbow In The Dark, Hungry For Heaven, or Breathless
Iron Maiden...Egypt...Chains are on, or Last In Line
Judas Priest...King of Rock-n Roll, or Sacred Heart
Loudness(are they still a band?)...We Rock, Like The Beat Of A Heart, or Kill The King(sounded good the first time they covered it)
Ritchie Blackmore, or Steve Vai solo...Still I'm Sad-no vocals, as the voice is gone.
David Coverdale/ Whitesnake...Mistreated, as this was a shared Deep Purple/Rainbow song
Ian Gillan... Man On The Silver Mountain, or Bible Black
...and for fun I'd like to see Ozzy just try to do Neon Nights, or Breaking into Heaven with Heaven & Hell.
Hopefully the new Electra single could get on there too, as I(and many others) missed out on Touranado.
I'm sure I've left several out, and for those I apoligize.
If we get some thoughts rolling around out there, maybe something will take off, and happen. _________________ ...and the time had come for the one to go to the temple of the king...RIP Ronnie. |

This is hard, because trying to visualize (er, audioize?) someone elses' voice on one of Ronnie's songs just produces cognitive dissonance (and sadness ).
But I decided to take a shot at it to see what I came up with: some of these are kind of off-the-wall (a couple aren't even metal or hard rock) and might not work in actuality, but here goes :
I want to third Iron Maiden for Egypt (chains are on).
Arch-era Fate's Warning reunion: Stargazer/Light in the Black
Serenity (Aus) -- Rainbow in the Dark / Holy Diver
Candlemass -- Bible Black / Dream Evil
Isole -- too Late / After All (the Dead)
Wuthering Heights -- Last in Line / Gates of Babylon
Blind Guardian -- 16th Century Greensleeves / Temple of the King
Wintersun -- Mob Rules
Diary of Dreams -- Shadow of the Wind
WeltenBrand -- Follow the Tears / Breaking into Heaven |

Iron Maiden is one band I had imagined might do well if they try their hand at a Dio tribute.
Bruce D is amazing in his own way. I recall hearing Ronnie saying he appreciated Bruce as a singer.
I found it also interesting that Ronnie noted 'Chris Cornell' as the only singer of 'the day' that was good. I think it might be fitting if Chris tried his hand at a tribute. It could probably be good too...but in these last years Chris went heavy cheese on us.
Rob Halford is another singer who 'might' do well with a Dio cover. He's amazing, but he's still not Dio.
Alice Cooper? I like how Alice sings but the idea of him singing a Dio tune turns me off.
Metallica? Metallica is amazing and I bet they could pull of something amazing though more likely in their own style somehow rather than trying to sing like Ronnie. I love James's voice, I just can't imagine him doing it to a Dio tune.
There are some songs that are so inherently Dio that covering them is almost blasphemous.
I enjoyed this 'producer's fun dream brainstorm.' |

Though Dio is one of the greatest voices ever,I could agree that Maiden could do a good job on the right song.
Though a Dio song would be a great bonus,in the case of the first one,I would just be happy with the Arch-Fates reunion
Though it would be his interpretation, and nothing wrong with that,Robert has already proved that he can do Dio songs well with Solitude's versions of Heaven and Hell, and their awesome heavy take on Dio's most Sabbathy song, "Shame On The Night"
Hansi Kursch has also proven himself with Guardians "Don't Talk To Strangers",Greensleeves (one of my personal Rainbow favorites) is a good choice,HK absolutely nailed it with Uriah Heeps "Wizard"
Another name I would add to the mix is Iced Earth,Barlow has a great voice.
Either one of the first two Warrior vocalists would be good,Parramore McCarty or Rob Rock
To me,what really needs to happen is another Holy Dio volume, covering other Rainbow,Sab,Dio and H and H songs, with some of the same bands, maybe adding Iced Earth and Rob Rock and inviting back Mike Tirelli, only a Dio fan could tell it wasn't the real thing on his rendition of Holy Diver.Halford could absolutely nail the more melodic parts, but it might need to be a duet of sorts with a more gruff vocalist, to have a Dio song sound right. _________________ Sword of Terraroth,fantasy/sci/fi with influences of Tolkien,Dungeons and Dragons,Grimms, mythology and the lyrics and concepts of metal bands,in particular the mystical words of Dio.The rainbow shines like magic in the dark of the midnight sky........ |

HolyMagica:
The Austrian symphonic-power-metal band "Serenity": yes, my favorite songs of theirs are "From Where the Dark is Born" and "Sheltered (by the Obscure)".
The UK Doom Metal band "Serenity": they're OK, but there are several other doom-metal bands I like better. |
