Well, Jorn has been singing "Straight Through The Heart" in his live shows since 2006. As for Tony Martin, I once saw a live video of him singing ''Time Machine", and he gave a surprisingly great performance of it.

Very good discussion!

Accordimg me opinion the Dio Band will live only in our CD's and hearts! No one can replace Ronnie as vocal! So, the question for Dio Band is completely clear! About Heaven And Hell is the same - both bands are unique thanks to Ronnie's Magic voice. For trubute you can choose some good vocalists and all be done very nice, but just like a "tribute"!... I prefer Tony Martin for a vocalist of Heaven And Hell, but they need to change the name - Headless Cross is a good name! In fact, after 2000 the reunion of Sabbath's Tony Martin's years is not possible (R.I.P. great, great Cozy Powell), so now is the moment for nice work of Tony Martin and the rest of Heaven And Hell... Jorn is good, but for Whitesnake! Doogie White is good for Deep Purple. I think that Tony Martin is the right choice with only one change - the name of band!

Ozzy doing a couple could be interesting Laughing

I would have to have a bucket near me... lol
Tony Martin with a renamed Heaven & Hell I could surely imagine, but they should not play the Dio songs, but only his stuff.
He is a great singer, but anyone but Dio singing his songs would just not sound right.
Like with Manowar, as much as I love Erics voice, I could not imagine him singing Dio, they want a tribute album out, well I will give it an ear, but doubt already that I'll like it...
With the tribute shows and Rob Halford singing, I can really not imagine that it would sound right, such a different voice... And such a different person when it comes to stage-acting...
Ronnie can never be replaced Crying or Very sad

I decided to go to YouTube and search Dio covers.

One in particular was 'The Last In Line.' Many people have done covers. Instrumentally I've found some folks who play it rather well, but I am not able to find a suitable singer to cover Dio.

Frankly, I think I said it somewhere before, for another artist to cover Dio, they need to find their own style and voice.

If you try to sing a DIO song and you can't really sing, it's going to SUCK! And these covers do suck.

It takes a special talent to hit those high notes, and even then it is hard for anyone to bring that same kind of charisma and tone that came with ease in Ronnie's voice.

You can't cover Dio. If it's done in Dio's style, I almost don't even want to hear it, unless I compare this experience to looking at a bloody car wreck on the road.

If however as I said someone records a version in their own style and voice, i can really enjoy it.

I wanted to add my two cents again after hearing the worst covers of my life.

I fancy myself a radical singer, but I do not have Dio's tone or range. If I cover him, I have to make it my own and that's the only way it would 'work.'

You can't cover Dio's songs b/c he was so singular that it will almost always feel unsatisfactory. I have not found a SINGLE Dio cover done in Dio's style, trying to sound like Dio that was good. You can't cover Ronnie. I am so redundant, I know, but it cannot be done.

It would be cool if the guys from Dio played under another name, maybe with Ripper Owens on vocals (he's managed by Wendy too).
I sincerely hope Heaven and Hell won't do anything under that name without RJD.

They will do this one-off tribute concert to RJD, and that will probably be the last we hear from Heaven And Hell...

You are absolutely correct, I have tried it many times, and it is impossible to copy his tone, feel and all round approach to a song. I started a topic in the tribute section mainly as info on Nevermet's tribute, but also threw up a Karaoke version of Heaven and Hell. Our tribute cover will be in our own style, but the Karaoke song I tried my best to come close, and like I said before its impossible.here is the link to the post http://www.ronniejamesdio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20408 if you are interested.

There can only be one Dio, his music took me to a rare place of beauty, a glittering dark light and a strong secure silence. Only the voice of Dio can do that with his music. No one can ever replace Ronnie James Dio. It turns my stomach to even think of how anyone else would sound TRYING to imitate his e mortal and majestic vocal energy. 'The Man On The Silver Mountain' will remain there forever.

I really think Tony, Geezer, and Vinnie should go out under the Sabbath name, yes Black Sabbath or at least "Sabbath" and do the songs all they want as long as they can find a guy that can sing with passion they could do Ozzy era songs too.. But, if they ever get back with Ozzy I will not support it, I have never been a fan of the Ozzy era Black Sabbath, I discoverd them in 1980 with the Heaven And Hell album to me Ronnie has always been the lead singer for Black Sabbath, I do own other Sabbath albums but none with Ozzy and I don't listen to anything really but the stuff with Ronnie.. If Sabbath got the right guy I would love it though, but the right guy in my opinion would be hard to find..

I suggested this in an earlier post, and I definitely would not have a problem with the band continuing under the name Black Sabbath, and performing songs from all eras of the band. Including Ronnie's of course. Whether Tony Martin still has the voice, I dunno. But I have seen old video footage of him singing some Ronnie era Sabbath tracks, and he did a really good job on them. Provided they got the right man, Id be happy for this to happen. But they are definitely finished under the name of Heaven & Hell.

Holymagica knows of my Kate Bush obsession... Laughing

I think a cover of All the Fools Sailed Away by Kate Bush would be beyond cool....

And another crazy thought just occurred to me just now. I vaguely remember a duet with Natalie Cole and the late Nat King Cole. Perhaps As Long As It's Not About Love could be reworked into a duet with maybe Kate, Doro, or Tarja. Oooo...the thought of that kind of gives me the chills!

Back to this thread! Smile

I have listened to about a million Rainbow in the Dark covers today. Needless to say, my ears hurt and I'm nearly deaf now.

As stated before, Ronnie cannot easily be covered.

I found a woman who did the 'best' job that I heard. It's a band called 'Shadowside.'

The other DOZEN covers are not worth mentioning. I realize people like to record, and I know when it works or not. It's funny because people sing these covers and they're not even close to acceptable or decent. Dio had a range and control at that pitch that I have not heard in another man. Perhaps the closest person with that kind of uncoverable tone would be someone like Freddie Mercury.

I'm impressed that a female can do this better than a million men Dio wanna be singers.

I listened to Jorn, Rob Halford, and a host of others, none satisfied me in the slightest.

Seriously, if you put the 'best' heavy metal singers in a room, Ronnie can cover most of their stuff and make it better. The opposite cannot be said of the others if they try their hand at Ronnie's vocal lines. I have not heard one person who sang the lines well, on pitch and right besides this lady I found.

I found a 'Dio cover band' named Heaven Eleven. The singer is no Ronnie, but it is enjoyable b/c you can see these guys put lots of effort into the whole 'look.' The singer is dressed like Ronnie and imitates Ronnie's same stage movements in every way. It's worth watching b/c they really put effort into the whole thing. The musicianship wasn't bad by en large. The really funny thing is these guys are from Japan(I think). I only say it's funny b/c it's always funny to hear someone sing in a foreign language. I suppose it adds to the sorta kinda charm of this group.

Basically I found what I thought I would. I found that most Dio covers are aplomb to disappoint. I suppose the joy is seeing people try. It's almost like I am searching for someone who has the unique ability.

That lady came the closest. It would be certainly cool to hear/see more folks try.

There could be a RJD cover olympics. Wink

I think the problem probably is, so many people are trying to imitate Dio when they cover his stuff. Being a girl, I'd have no hope of being able to sing like Dio anyways. lol But I always stick to singing my own way, and in my own style when I sing along to songs. I think more people need to do this, especially when covering songs that feature unique, wonderful vocals such as Ronnie's.

I actually like Jorn's versions of Dio's songs. Because at no point is he trying to imtate the great man. If you hear him sing in his solo band, and with Masterplan, he sings in exactly the same way as he does with the Dio stuff. I think when listening to covers of a great voice like Dio's, you have to be able to switch off, and judge the vocals on their own merits. Instead of immediately comparing them to Ronnie's. His voice was unique, and cannot be replicated, so expecting that is just stupid imo.

Lots of singers would be able to do a great job with Ronnie's material. But they wouldnt sound like him. As long as a singer puts his own unique stamp on the songs, and isnt trying to imitate, then I can definitely appreciate it.
