I prefer Dio.
Ozzy is not 1/4 the singer or artist.
Blam! |

Pointless poll if you ask me to have on Ronnie James Dio's forum.
These polls normally end up being closed down
Becoz folks go way off topic. |

What better place to ask?
It's obvious that both of these men command their own huge audience that appreciates them for their work with Black Sabbath.
I don't think this is a stupid poll because I love the debate and hearing why.
Ozzy has made some great music as well, Diary of a Madman for instance, however, despite this being classic and great, it doesn't even compare to how Dio could vocalize on anything.
I can't think of another singer with more impact in Black Sabbath besides Dio after Ozzy departed.
Didn't mean to offend anybody. |

Your not offending anyone, but this is a Ronnie James Dio forum not a Black Sabbath forum and no one does it better than Joe Siegler.
Folks are gonna vote for Ronnie in Black Sabbath becoz this is his home, if this poll was on Ozzy's forum folks would vote for him.
So really there is no point to this poll.
You are asking the wrong people. |

| It is of course Dio. ---- Ozzy Osbourne ( The Band ) had a lot of real Great songs with great guitars , but Ozzy never seem to fit in his own Band.Ozzy voice never fitted to Heavy Metal at all . He has a weak cheasy voice .Except Ozzy I don't know of any known singer ,who is not playing another instrument . I even doupt that Ozzy wrote any song completly . My guess is , he came up with a basic idea , wrote the lyrics for the choruses, the rest have been done by tha other band members. Maybe as a privat person Ozzy is a nice guy so he has a lot of friends who carrying through his carreer. And there is Sharon who leads him. Personally I can't stand old Sabbath songs with Ozzy (Ronnie sounded so much better on Live Evil) and "Diary of a Mad Man" would be a better epic song with Ronnie .Ronnie has the ability to let every song shine,Ozzy has the ability to ruin it . Of course it is allmost a matter of taste. My experience is you can even burp into a microphone and you will allways have some fans. |

Maybe I got a little bit off-Topic Dio has been The Voice of Black Sabbath. His dark growling fits perfect to the band's sound and concept. |

It is certainly a matter of taste, but I have to agree, when Ronnie joined Black Sabbath, I felt that they unquestionably rose to a knew level of artistry.
As you also mentioned, Ronnie's versions of the Ozzy era Sabbath songs on Live Evil are superior and far more captivating.
I have to defend not so much the tone of Ozzy's voice as his overall persona. Ozzy has always been an over the top wild man, very fun and charismatic, as well as humorous I might add. Dio seems to have been a far more grounded person personally(I just imagine comparing the performances and interviews of these two guys).
In any case, I think Ozzy's appeal in Black Sabbath has more to do with his persona than his singing. Ronnie unlike Ozzy had both the persona and the singular voice of the universe.
You mentioned Ozmosis. Even Ozzy was put off with the impossible things you hear his voice do on that album b/c of the over engineering. It also was not my favorite Ozzy album by far, and after Ozmosis I never bought another Ozzy record, and I don't expect that I will.
As far as I know and I've heard on tape, I never heard Dio process his voice to do anything that he couldn't really do.
I know some folks find this thread off putting, but I really enjoy the contrast of these two men with others who are familiar with their respective bodies of work.
I am not knocking Ozzy. I love Ozzy. I think he's had an amazing story as well, but Dio's work and voice of are such a singular and superior quality. Even still, I enjoy the comparisons and thoughts others have on this matter as both of these guys are obviously the two Sab vocals that truly mattered.
Sincerely.

I dont think anyone would want to set out to slam Ozzy at all - after all he was the voice of sabbath for many many years and as a band they gave the world something very special.
Ronnie bought a new dimension to Sabbath, however sabbath purists will undoubtely say that anything without Ozzy wasnt Sabbath (hell Ozzy himself said that when Heaven and Hell announced they were getting together!).
Now for me....I've never been a great sabbath fan, I respect what they did but it just never really grabbed me. Yet when Ronnie joined them I got into the Dio sabbath......but thats because I was already a fan of Ronnie and genuinely believe he created something extra for the band.
I believe he made Tony and Geezer lift their game after years of being forced to sit back and play the same set and took the sound of the band to a new level.
So I am not knocking Ozzy........after all whatever you may think of him hes done well and made a few quid but he would never NEVER stand up against Ronnie James Dio. BUT that said its just my opinion! LOL! _________________ Stand up and Shout!!!!! |

I can't choose. I love them both.
Personally I think that the first Sabbath line-up is the definitive Sabbath line-up. When I listen to the two Dio fronted line-ups, It's like listening to another band. Not only the vocals are diffrent, but the overall sound is a much more matured Heavy Metal sound. |

| The first Black Sabbath song I ever heard was "Mob Rules" So I heard Ronnie first .After listening to "Life Evil" I explored the Ozzy Years . No wonder , that Ozzy never had a chance . |
