Sometimes...depends on the song and band for me.
Lets not forget they have to be so harsh and brutal.
Anders Jacobsson has spoken passages just as much as his death growls. Very Happy Remember the nature of some of the songs and also the vocals are just another instrument.
How could you sing this song any different?

Stick with the song to the end and tell me....Anders vocals don't work in this track! Wink
The lyrics are in the clip as well.

That could have easily been sung by someone with Dickinson/Tate qualities, and would have had a much better impact. The parts where he doubles her with the delay could have been done in baritone, and would have sounded more chant-like, lending a more dramatic tone to the song overall (like "Defender" by Man O War with Orson Welles).

That's why they call it opinion, and why there are so many styles of music to choose from. I am not saying your personal taste in music is flawed in any way, I am just saying that mine differs...

* edited for Welles reference

All i can say is what a shame for that growler track to get mixed in with the rest of that lovely song, the chick sounded killer and the growler would fit in maybe a couple lines but that's it for me. Just my opinion.

It's like running at the extreme all the time, there's no feeling... makes me want to throw the guy a bag of cough drops! Laughing

Rainbowinthdrk nailed it with using Dickenson in there or Ronnie for that matter would be killer! Wink

I think there's just as much emotion in a growl or a scream as there is in any normal singing voice. I almost always prefer them.

Maybe for that one scream but if it was nothing but scream the entire song how would that sound!? Like crap! Laughing Music has ups and downs and that really is the point. But hey everyone likes different things and that IS healthy so what I'm writing is just my opinion and the growlers can go as long as they can find fans and that's cool for them, it just won't be me in the crowd. Laughing

GUITARGOD & Rainbowinthdrk Smile
I do agree with a little with what you say....BUT Laughing
It just would not be Draconian if there was no vocals like Anders Jacobsson.
You got to remember after DIO....I simply adore everything about this band...so I will never be objective Laughing
I would love for DIO to record a song with this band Exclamation
GG...don't worry so much about expressing your opinion.
Not everyone is gonna like this kind of sound.

Anyway I glad you both said good things about Lisa 's vocals Wink

This is live clip and features more of Lisa's singing.

Draconian - Heaven Laid In Tears (live in Rivne, Ukraine)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KCuALc3t2A
Go on GG and Rainbowinthdrk I dare you to listen to it VERY LOUD!! Smile Crying or Very sad
Hope the lyrics help....
Behold the skies, they're ful of lies... in disguise
Behold the skies, they're ful of lies... in disguise

O, creator, so long we have fallen to our knees
So long we have murdered our honor, while protecting thine

Behold the skies, they're ful of lies... in disguise
Behold the skies, they're ful of lies... in disguise

And we, warriors moulded in the blood of his vanity
The silent, loyal shepard who tends my light is dead... in me

So let the night take thee in her arms,
And dry these tears into her embrace
It's the end of pretending and defending...
God's holy light

El-shaddai, we serve thhe, henceforth... no more

Show me heaven, show me guilt... embrace the pain
We must suffer to realize, we must despair again and again
No longer our knees we shall bend, no longer fold our frozen hands
We long for the darkness, our flames still burn for mother night...
Behold us now, as we cry, soon to die... to rise again

Behold the skies, they're ful of lies... in disguise
Behold the skies, they're ful of lies... hear our cries

I have seen us bathing in blood to defend his very glory
I have seen us kneel and praise for nothing...
I have seen him dying in our eyes
I have realized that god owes us his life

Growls are not really my thing, but I've always made it a point to never tell anyone what they like is not music. It takes all kinds of people to make up the world, and one mans trash is another mans treasure.

Having said that, Growls like screams can be very effective as accents in songs. Its like back in the 80s singers thought that if you didnt sing with the highest voice you could for the entire song it wasnt any good, but guys like Ronnie and Coverdale to mention a couple used high notes as accents giving their songs more dynamics and also providing them with staying power over the years. Even Halford doesnt sing high all the time. Using this ideology, songs that growl in certain places in songs instead of all the way through will probably see a lot longer shelf life.

Well then that would lead me to ask....

If Anders Jacobsson was not a member of the band prior to this record, and they had a more "normal" singer before his joining, would you not lament the decision to allow him to join Draconian? If so, then it would not be Draconian with him, either.

Ultimately, for me, if it sounds like someone is vomiting on the microphone, I would hope there was a copious amount of Jack Daniels involved, and that whomever I am seeing live is not doing so intentionally.....

Rainbowinthdrk Laughing
Anders has been with Draconian from day 1 he's also a major influnce in the writing of their songs.
Without him this band would not be around and still trying to find their sound and direction.
Of course guitarist Johan Ericson must be mentioned as well.
Draconian are not 100% Doom metal as such but a mixture of dark and melancholic gothic/death metal with lots of great melodies.
The tempo changes alot in their songs...their songs are never boring. With Anders he makes you feel his pain in his words...thats what makes it work so many fans of this band.
Checkout out their reviews on Amazon.com,you will not find one bad review from the fans of this band.
So if Anders is not your cup of tea,
what about british band My Dying Bride...this is there new single.
The vocals are very different from Anders

It's been some years back now but I hung out with a Growler vocalist at Studio7 in Seattle Washington just enough to chat a little at the bar upstairs and his band was very good, i didn't tell him this but when his band started the first song i was thinking to myself "hey these guys are going to be good!" then he started in with the growler thing and it was a huge let-down for me Laughing I went back upstairs to the bar! Laughing Laughing Hammer fall and Edguy played that night also, Edguy blew Hammerfall out of the water! Smoken show, and they hit the bar after the show so we all got to BS with them after their set, MetalBard had done an interview with the guitarist of Edguy before the show which was cool and fun, we had press passes the whole 9 yards... cool night! Very Happy
