Tarja Turunen kicked of her first solo tour Sunday night (November 25) at the Columbia Club in Berlin, Germany. Fan-filmed video footage of the song "Sing for Me" can be viewed below (courtesy of "sunek99").

In other news, Tarja has checked in with the following message: "The setlist of the concert is very challenging for the band and they are really giving their best. They seem to enjoy the music very much, what it is the most important thing. Little by little we are all getting into the songs and into the show itself. . . Only eight concerts are left and we will truly miss this feeling of being happy together. The atmosphere within the group is just amazingly good. I have never felt like this before. Already we are looking forward for the tour next year and I am sure it will be GREAT. I started to make some plans and to think about the songs that we will perform in the future. I have read and heard that some of you are missing 'The Reign', 'Die Alive' and 'Minor Heaven'… For sure in the future they will be a part of our concerts. Is very comforting to see that all the songs from the album found people that love them. Also some old favourites that we are not doing now will be heard as well. But now, we cannot play for three hours." |

Loving the new album - better than the new Nightwish one. And finally we hear Tarja allowed to really give the singing some welly on a studio album. The pop voice on Once and parts of Centuray Child didn't do it justice. _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

I really don't know whether to get it or not I've heard some bad things and the clips haven't exactly excited me to be honest. I'll be waiting till Christmas whatever happens now but even then I'm still not sure. I did really like The Reign. What would the two of you give it out of say ten? |

It's really good. Sounds much fresher than the Nightwish one, and the songs are more interesting and have more soul. And it's worth it just to hear Tarja sing with gusto. The poison cover is pretty good too!!
The clips don't do it justice. I wasn't excited by them either but I tried it because I tried Dark Passion Play. This is far better
Although I must admit that I don't get the 'story' of the album. I've read that there are recurrring themes and a story or concept of sorts - I don't see it myself. Can anyone shed any light? _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

Cool video not what I was expecting but very good. As of corse is the song and the rest of the album. It's really impressed me, not a bad song on it however I think I prefer Dark Passion PLay overall. Not by much though. |

UK’s What Records has just released a limited-edition double-vinyl version of former NIGHTWISH singer Tarja Turunen’s new solo album, "My Winter Storm". Limited to 300 copies, the two-LP set can be ordered at http://www.whatrecords.co.uk/items/45868.htm
"My Winter Storm" is scheduled for release in the U.S. on February 26, 2008. The CD will be made available in two exclusive U.S. versions via Fontana: the standard and deluxe editions (the latter featuring extra tracks not released elsewhere, as well visually stimulating bonus DVD content).
Tarja filmed a video for her next solo single, "Die Alive", on December 9, 2007 in Berlin, Germany. Check photos from the video shoot at http://www.pbase.com/metalphotography/tarja&page=all
"My Winter Storm" was produced by Daniel Presley (FAITH NO MORE, JEWEL, THE BREEDERS), who has been joined in the studio by a truly stellar line-up of musicians: Doug Wimbish on bass (LIVING COLOUR, ANNIE LENNOX, JOE SATRIANI, JEFF BECK, MADONNA, ROLLING STONES), Alex Scholpp on electric guitars (FARMER BOYS) and Earl Harvin on drums (SEAL, PET SHOP BOYS, AIR), a player personally selected by Tarja after she saw him stealing the show at a SEAL concert. Keyboards and programming, meanwhile, are being provided by Torsten Stenzel, whose previous credits include NELLY FURTADO, MOBY, TINA TURNER, VANESSA MAE and more. _________________ Video games are bad for you? Tarja Turunen is elated by the success of her solo debut, "My Winter Storm", in her homeland of Finland and elsewhere in Europe. When it was released last November, it entered the Finnish album chart at No. 1, the first record by a solo artist to debut atop the list. It's now platinum there (30,000 copies), gold in Russia (10,000 copies) and nearly gold in Germany (100,000). Finland also nominated her for an Emma Award (the equivalent of a Grammy) for best Finnish artist, and Germany nominated her for an Echo Award for most successful newcomer.
Promotion for "My Winter Storm" has Tarja touring Europe in May and likely again at the end of the year, as well as South America in July/August. She tells TheKillingWords.com, "I can't tell you for sure, but hopefully I'm coming in September to U.S.A., which is a very big dream of mine. I would really love to go there." She's also planning a run of live classical dates with friends from her study group; they anticipate visiting Asia around 2010. "That's a rough plan, but I do not want to forget classical music," she says. "That is very, very important part of my life."
Despite her packed schedule, Tarja is already working on material for a new album and anticipates it arriving next year. She says with a laugh, "It sounds crazy, because the new album just got out, but in a way, I feel very energetic and I want to keep on going . . . I feel that it's very nice to start the process for the new album. I have lots of ideas already, [but] not to change that much the direction or anything like that."
Tarja also opened up about her departure from Nightwish:
TheKillingWords.com: Can you address anything about your leaving NIGHTWISH? How do you feel about it now as opposed to when it occurred?
Tarja: Yeah! Yeah! Well, time has passed by. If I go back into that time when it happened, I got that letter from the band and all the media hassle after that, and it took weeks in Finland. It was really not [an] easy period of my life at all. I would say that it was a terrifying, terrifying month in a way, only that one month, that I was trembling the whole month. I was really having a bad time of my life and it was not easy . . . that public pressure that was so big and never expected . . . But on the other hand now, I have been growing as an artist, as a person, also a lot after those times, and I have seen life from the different perspective . . .
Still today, I do not agree with the thing that happened or the way it [ended], my career with the band, so that was a very, not too nice thing, you know [laughs], what happened, the way it happened. So, definitely, definitely I do not have any hard feelings. As I said, I'm very proud of those years and I wish them all the best and the success and everything, all the best, seriously, from the bottom of my heart. But yeah, it's very good time for me, very good time for them, definitely.
TheKillingWords.com: Do you think there might have been something that gave them the impression that they had, even if that was not the impression you were trying to give them, or do you not see anything like that? Do you think they misinterpreted things you were doing?
Tarja: Oh, that is something that I will question all my life, I think. [laughs] There were many, you know, I can't just think that all of this happened because of me, that there was so many problems in the band already for several, several years, and we were never able to communicate between the band members, you know. There were always lack of communication, and the way they decided to have its end, so it's very, very difficult, difficult situation and I still don't understand, but the thing is that, I leave them as the subject is, I leave it as it is. I don't want to get into that because it was enough difficult for me, so, I believe that time tells.

Tarja Turunen has issued the following update:
"My friends, the tour is happily over. But very soon, we will start next shows in Europe.
"There is no time really to relax since I have to keep on rehearsing for them. I will go to make a visit at my vocal coach who is most probably going to 'kill' me again. Just kidding; she is just magnificent help and amazingly kind lady.
"Mexican show was great and it was nice to see the reaction of the audience when they heard the new songs in our set list. I spoke with many fans and they felt that the show was a lot better than my first visit in Mexico.
"As always, I learn new things about myself and from my music through my musical journey and it is very rewarding to hear good feedback from my supporters.
"Thank you Mexico! As I said during the show, I hope to see you next time with my new album.
"It was also wonderful to make for the first time a show in Venezuela and to see that I have an audience there! I got to meet many fans in the singing session I did in Caracas and the feeling was really overwhelming.
"The local promoter got very emotional to see how people were reacting towards me and told me that he had never seen anything like that before. The devotion of the fans was unexpected for him and for some local media. Not for me
"The final challenge was to make four shows in Buenos Aires. Everything went fine and I was very happy to be able to finish the tour with these shows here. Especially the last two shows in La Trastienda were great, because the audience was seated and they could follow every little details of our show. For me it was nice to see their expressions closer and to feel their love.
"I would like to do similar kind of concerts in other countries, but promoters haven't realized yet that my fans would like it too.
"I am sure the band was happy with the tour. Every one of them already flew to different destinations and in couple of weeks we'll find each other in Budapest where we'll start rehearsing for the summer shows. Can't wait to get there!
"Next week I will face another challenge when I am performing with [Argentine] band RATA BLANCA in Luna Park stadium [in Buenos Aires]. I have to learn few of their songs, which means I am going to sing in Spanish again!!!!! Let's see how that goes. I am expecting to have a great time with RATA on stage. Was very nice to receive their invitation."
Tarja Turunen has set "What Lies Beneath" as the working title of her new solo CD, tentatively due before the end of the year. She says, "With [2007's] 'My Winter Storm', I chose the name of the album in the early stages and that helped me to create the concept for the album. With the new album, I decided to do it the same way, so I searched for an inspiring title and all the songs are one way or another related to it."
Regarding the songwriting process for the new CD, Turunen said, "In the last months I've been writing a lot of music for my new album. Songwriting is always an amazing learning experience, and it has been a pleasure to discuss music with different people.
"The album process is still going on and I have more songs that are in the working. It is sounding very promising. The songs are absolutely more mature, wild, and emotional and they sound more me, if I can say so.
"The biggest difference in preparing this new album is that I will be taking the time that I need until the songs are in a shape that I am happy with. No matter how long it takes. I want it to be perfect for me. No hurry; no pressure." |
