There's a version of Gates of Babylon in the album Holy Dio, performed by Yngwie Malmsteen and Jeff Scott Soto.
Have you listened to this version of the song? Do you like it?

Since it's many people's favourite song from Dio I want to know your opinion.

Please don't start a neverending discussion about Ritchie Blackmore and Yngwie Malmsteen and who's best and who has a bigger ego Very Happy

I like it, though I like the original version best.

Edit: Oops, I forgot to add the last option, silly me Laughing
Edit 2: Corrected, when I looked for the song title I found that Dio was on vocals on the Malmsteen version, I later found out that the vocalist is Jeff Scott Soto. Sorry about the mistake! I hope this still qualifies for this section of the forums!

as far as I know, this DIO Jams and Rarities (2008) is a self-made virtual album, by a Brazilian fan; he put some long our of print stuff together with songs from still available official releases, together with stuff from bootlegs:

03. Ronnie James Dio & Deep Purple - Sitting In A Dream
04. Ronnie James Dio & Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
05. Ronnie James Dio & Deep Purple- Fever Dreams
06. Ronnie James Dio & Deep Purple - Love Is All
07. Ronnie James Dio & Yngwie Malmsteen - Gates of Babylon
08. Ronnie James Dio & Yngwie Malmsteen - Dream On
09. Ronnie James Dio & Roger Glover And Guests - Sitting in A Dream
10. Ronnie James Dio & Roger Glover And Guests - Love is all
11. Ronnie James Dio & Roger Glover And Guests- Homeward
12. Ronnie James Dio & Bruce Dickinson / Nicko McBrain - Rainbow in the Dark
13. Ronnie James Dio & Bruce Dickinson / Nicko McBrain - Man On The Silver Montain / Long Live Rock' n 'Roll
14. Ronnie James Dio & Kerry Livgren - Mask Of The Great Deceiver
15. Ronnie James Dio & Kerry Livgren - To Live For The King
16. Ronnie James Dio & Munetaka Higuchi With Dream Castle - What Cost War
17. Ronnie James Dio & Elf - Behind Blue Eyes - By The Who

OK, I just found out it's either a version made by Yngwie Malmsteen and Jeff Scott Soto of the original song or a remix (Dream on is a remix probably, as far as I know they never recorded that together...). I'll try to change the poll accordingly. Sorry about the mess Sad

come on; check
http://www.dio.net/biography/discography/Tributes_CD.html

Dream On with Dio and Malmsteen is in the Aerosmith tribute (and its fantastic!); Gates is in the Holy Dio Tribute.

no worries, you are very welcome!

and yes, the link is wonderful, start on

www.dio.net

and explore, particularly the discography section is the most complete on all things Dio; for instance, there you will find that Dio sang one song in Italian...

I find the vinyl bootlegs particularly interesting, I collect them, when I first found this site and saw it, it was like Ali Baba's cave opening up, full of treasures! Now some of the records shown there are my own, I sent the webmaster (Tapio) the pics.

The original is better for sure... but will have to notice that Holy Dio is a really great tribute album! Wink

Only one weak performance there IMO, and that's "The Last In Line"... the singer really sucks and the sound quality isn't very good either.

But there are many great covers there, most notably "Holy Diver", "Long Live Rock & Roll", "Egypt (The Chains Are On)", "Don't Talk To Strangers" and "Temple Of The King", all better than the originals to me. Very Happy

Cool

No way sorry no one does Gates of Babylon better than Ronnie James Dio and the Rainbow band backing him up!
