OK: I'll give it a try. Of course I'm hair splitting of where the line sits between "hard rock" (which was in the 70's and early 80's) and "Metal" which came a bit later.
1. Geddy Lee (1st three Rush albums before they became "progressive")
2. Phil Lynot - Thin Lizzy, great singer and character too.
3. Tom Hamilton - Aerosmith (very underrated).
4. Rob Grange - Ted Nugent Band (from the Derrek St. Holmes days)
5. Phil Upchurch - Sammy Hagar and Montrose bass genius.
6. John Deacon - Queen (need I say more?)
7. John Paul Jones - Zep of course.
8. Jack Bruce - basically singlehandedly created hard rock bass. Except for possibly,
9. John Entwhistle. THE MAN!!!
10. Mike Anthony - Van Halen (great bassist and way better than the chubby dwarf they have now). _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |

Good list!!! And I know where you are coming from with the "Hard Rock" aspect.
I'm pretty sure that there are a few others out there as well.

| Including Yngwie Malmsteen. He plays the bass track on his CDs. |

Oh God, I always think lead guitarists make terrible bassists! I'll give it a relisten though.
Example: Joe Satriani's bassi playing on his solo albums is among the worst I have ever heard! _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |

Hendrix played some bass tracks on his albums after the experience broke up. Used a Hagstrom 8 string, and wasn't too bad either considering. |

I've seen pictures of Hendrix with a Jazz Bass. I've always thought that must be him on some Electric Ladyland tracks. Especially the spacy ones.\
Bob Dylan and even Elvis Presley played bass.
One visitor reported Elvis was sitting playing his Fender bass on the sofa (unplugged) during their whole visit. _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |
