What songs are Heavy Metal or just Heavy Rock?
Wikipedia Rolling Eyes says....
Heavy Metal is a loud, aggressive style of Rock music. The bands who play heavy-metal music usually have one or two guitars, a bass guitar and drums. In some bands, electronic keyboards, organs, or other instruments are used. Heavy metal songs are loud and powerful-sounding, and have strong rhythms that are repeated. There are many different types of Heavy Metal, some of which are described below.
Heavy metal bands sometimes dress in jeans, leather jackets, and leather boots, and have long hair. Heavy metal bands sometimes behave in a dramatic way when they play their instruments or sing. However, many heavy metal bands do not like to do this.

So I ask is this song Metal.... Question
Death on Two Legs -Queen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXlumq7b498
Or What about this other song from Queen is this Heavy Metal?
Queen - Princes Of The Universe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnrXiaPVeHY

Hey folks you don't have to debate my choices if you have some of your own....please post them Smile

Queen always had, particularly in their first records, songs which were related to hard rock, also in type of image which is quite 70s glam at times.

They had the guitars, the agressive vocals, the solid rythm section.

Queen was one of those rare bands thatw was able to dance back an forth across the line. Princes of the universe along with the entire Highlander Soundtrack is a perfect example of that. They were probaly the most diverse band ever!

So can we could say that Queen dabbled a little in Heavy Metal.
nunoni Smile Lets not forget also Brighton Rock solo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m69BrvJNfg
alitivity Smile You are right one of the most diverse band ever!
But it still took me a while to get into Hot Space Smile

We could consider these also as Metal from Queen.
My evidence
Now I'm Here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlQ8oTmlEtQ
Queen- Stone Cold Crazy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9PJ2uxiUGc
Queen - Ogre Battle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DvlYv5RrVQ
Queen - Sheer Heart Attack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbnJH95QCKk
Queen- Gimme the prize
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTv4Jc-9FXw
Queen - The Hitman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vu10vRUeG6A

I wanted to add Queen's Innuendo but the jury is still out on that one.
Maybe if Freddie was not so flamboyant in some of his performances this band could get more credit for some great Heavy Metal songs. They have crossed over to so many other genres of music like Hard rock, progressive rock, pop, funk rock and dance then why not Heavy Metal Exclamation

So whats your verdict?
Can we say that QUEEN dabbled in Heavy Metal.
Yes or No!
They get a yes from me Smile

So true .. as a kid i didn't like the fact that you could buy a Queen album and not know what to expect, i wanted the hard sound and when i bought and album i was looking for a hard rocking album so I was even bumd out when i picked up Judas Priest Stained Class because the mix was so pop like, total let down. For me some predictability was good. I still feel that way when looking for an album. Laughing

The moment I realized that Freddie was one of the greatest Vocalists ever was when I turned on my TV and during a figure skating Competition, there was an Aria playing and it was a voice I knew all to well. Freddie Mercury! He was the one guy in Rock History that could sing anything he wanted and sound good doing it.

Overall you are right, they did dabble into Metal territory on certain songs. Even Bohemian Rhapsody has that incredible head banging riff towards the end of the song.

agreed with everyone! Queen did too many things to be put in any category, and enough of everything to be put in most.

I want to talk about Thin Lizzy.I have always thought of them as 'heavy rock'but a couple of songs are close to Heavy Metal than Heavy Rock.I will kick your ass if you try and tell me that Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham did not have a Metal riff in them Wink

Think back to 1976 and Jailbreak and the tracks Warrior
Thin Lizzy - Warriors (BBC Sessions, 1976)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3jWd8Ibifw
Thin Lizzy - Emerald
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajJYL1GaVlo
Two Metal classics if you ask me Smile

There is loads I can post believe me... Razz
Thin Lizzy - Massacre
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1vIoPWzgkw
Thin Lizzy - Killer on the Loose
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0XvXTXiWu8

Think back to the songs that JUDAS PRIEST or SCORPIONS put out as Heavy Metal back then and tell me that the music Thin Lizzy was producing was not Heavy Metal.

I can ended the debate with one cd...Thunder & Lightning Very Happy
The final studio album Crying or Very sad
Many folks forget that when John Sykes came along all the songs had been written...apart from Cold Sweat
All fans of Heavy Metal should have this in their collection Exclamation
Came out in 1982...this cd is just as important as Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast
Bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden have said they were influenced by Thin Lizzy.
Thin Lizzy - Thunder and Lightning
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5adrB9VV6dc
Thin Lizzy - The Holy War
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VW4fvUAe_6Y
Thin Lizzy - Heart Attack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O01Riv9XvhM
Thin Lizzy - Cold Sweat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mH8rjE9Tz8w
Thin Lizzy - Baby Please Don't Go
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkjuD-uK2KY

This album doesn't have any fillers...every track is timeless even the slowest song on the album is one of the greatest songs ever written Shocked
Thin Lizzy Live 1983 - The Sun Goes Down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5jDrqB83Ls
There is debate about this song title...I have read that Phil really means Son instead of Sun.
I believe the song is about Phil and his habits Crying or Very sad

Hey Bobby66 Smile trying playing the solos in this song and you will need to change your pants Razz Wink
Hey Bob Smile ...you got to admit that Brian Downey's playing has got to be Heavy Metal Exclamation

So are Thin Lizzy Heavy Metal or Heavy Rock Exclamation
