I'm 26 so I've been an active listener for 12-14 years, I was a passive rock listener before (I don't think any of my parents' vinyls can be considered metal, but I had nice doses of Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Rolling Stones... as a child) _________________ We rock! |

I first listened to what we termed "heavy" in the 70's. Listened to Cream, Hendrix, Deep Purple, Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy, early Queen, Rainbow, Bad Company.
Saw a lot of bands in the late 70's, early 80'S like UFO, Saxon etc which took it in the "heavy metal" era of Judas Priest etc. If you didnt live in Glasgow or Edinburgh back then you didnt get to see the really big bands who tended to bypass where i lived.
Lost my focus in the 90's but did really get into Iron Maiden when i saw the Raising Hell concert on TV c 93 which was Bruce Dickinsons last concert at that time.
Been going to metal concerts again from about 2004 onwards and seen a lot of great bands (including Maiden, Dio x2 etc) and for me, metal is as strong and as relevant in 2009 as it has ever been. |

Think you could've added a further age catagory or two here.
Maybe 20 - 30 years and 30+ years.
I'm proud to say that I've been listening to, shall we just say, "Rock music" since 1975.
Back then, there weren't quite so many genres as there are now, it was just called rock music. I'd listen to "Fluff" Freeman ans Annie Nightingale at the weekends, hearing Floyd followed by Sabbath followed by King Crimson followed by Thin Lizzy followed by Deep Purple followed by.....
Oh, what the f**k!!!! I think you should get the picture..................

well, this post clearly needs to have 20-29, 30-39, and 40+ categories, now that Sabbath's 1st album is over 40 years old, not to mention the other forefathers of metal! It seems most of us are in the 20+ category, but there is a difference between children who started to listen to metal/hard rock 20 years ago, and an older guy like me who started at 10 (32 years ago) with my older brothers' Deep Purple and Led Zep albums!
Anyway, the first metal album I bought with my own money was Led Zep 1 and the second was Number of the Beast, both in 1982. |

| Why do I have to be classified as a geezer? Maybe I just started at a young age. I was 15 in 1986. |
