Randy Rhoads vs. Eddie Van Halen
Who was the best?
Both amazing guitarists,but I think Randy was more versatile becoz of his classical influences.
Unless you have heard not Randy Rhoads playing its really hard to describle his riffs and solos.
The man was a legend and died way before his time.

Randy and i'll tell you why. Randy was looking to advance the way he played guitar. He was going to go back to school for classical guitar, and more than likely would have taken the guitar to a whole new level.
Eddy is a great guitarist, but he reached a platau that he never seemed to want to surpass. Eddy hasnt changed anything about how he plays in at least twenty years if not more. He has even resorted to taking other peoples gimics to keep his audience thinking he was innovative ie.. Paul Gilberts electric drill.

alitivity  Eddie Van Halen is amazing and ''Women and Children First''is a timeless classic for me, its hard to believe this cd came out 28 years ago 
But Rhoads I think is just a little more versatile and very unpredictable but would be interesting to hear what the guitar players out there think. |

I don't think a fair comparison can be made in this case because of the limited material we have from Randy. Comparing 12 albums of Eddie material to the 2 readily available Rhoads albums (although there are five), you can hear the advancement in Randy's playing from Blizzard to Diary. As Mr. Al stated, Eddie seemed to rest on his laurels being credited for a technique that actually dates back to the mid 18th century.
I am a Randy fan through and through, but if Van Halen didn't open for Black Sabbath in 1979, there may not be any talk of Randy today. It was Van Halen blowing Sabbath off the stage every night that led Ozzy to L.A. for his next guitar player..

Rhandy Rhoads never used four guitars on one track. (Eruption uses four guitars). Rhandy Rhoads was a god and Van Halen is just okay.

Sorry, Eddie.
Randy Rhodes because his mobility, imagination, and understanding of music theory put him worlds ahead of Eddy.
Eddy is amazing, and Randy was great, but there was just something extra special in Randy's playing.
You can hear on RR's tribute album how Randy accentuated the song parts he was playing live. If they were cool on the album, he was doing even more when you heard him live.
Randy Rhodes played Black Sabbath's Paranoid with extra insanity and aggression from hell when he played it LIVE on Tribute. Tony Iommi himself could not do it better and he is amazing too.

So your heart is in the right place
For me anyway its Rhoads classical music influences on Heavy Metal songs...I really like the most,he was always willing to learn and keep improving,I read even up to his death he was still taking lessons on how to play classical guitar.
Would have been interesting to hear what he would sound like today becoz most classical guitar playing is about notes and not fingerings,there is loads of Guitar players out there who can only think of getting through the notes rather than playing the real substance of each note,guys like Schenker and Rhoads for me are Axeman who take great care and focus on there timing and tone and this makes them a little better than the rest. |

Stanely Jordon came 10 years after Eddie Van Halen. Both Eddie and Randy brought ground breaking influence to the guitar world the same way Robert Johnson was an influence.
Anyway, it's all laid out in the Rock'n Roll Hall of Fame. Guitar players who have had a influence in rock. |
