OK, this will be tough, because there's a lot of great bassists who aren't "metal" - in other words, Geddy Lee, Jaco and Chris Squire are out! Make them METAL to the bone!!!
Here's mine:
1. Jason Newstead - Metallica.
2. Jimmy Bain - Rainbow
3. Paul Gray - Slipknot
4. Ian Hill - Judas Priest (very underrated and always great clean tone).
5. Francis Buchholz - Scorpions
6. Blackie Lawless - actually a great bassist when he played it with WASP - too bad he stopped.
7. Steve Harris - Iron Maiden (also major songwriter)
8. Pete Way - UFO (co-wrote many songs and great Background vocalist - often overlooked important part of a band).
9. Tom Araya - Slayer (also vocalist).
10. Rex Brown - Pantera! (also very underrated). _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |

To say that Cliff was the best, is hard. Would he have been the best, Maybe. The problem is that his body of work, no matter how great it is, is not very extensive. Someone like Steve Harris has had a large and also incredible body of work, so he gets the edge for me. _________________ Check out Al Diamond Phillips/Nevermet on the web

1. Geezer Butler
2. Cliff Burton
3. Steve Harris
4. Jimmy Bain
5. Ian Hill
6. Rudy Sarzo
From here on I go into hard rock lol.
7. John Paul Jones

10. Andy Fraiser (Mr. Big. Got to love the bass solo in that song)
Most of my influences as a bassist myself aren't very broad but I'm fine with that. |

Would you make that same statement referring to Rhoads, Al? _________________ http://ladyrock.informe.com/ |

Thanks for the compliment Reem - do my best always.
And Trevor Bolder - intersting choice! Ziggy Stardust Band!
A lot of people forget one of the most bone crushing early heavy metal albums ever made is:
David Bowie - Man Who Sold the World.
And Mick Ronsons Solo on "Width of a Circle" is just jaw-dropping. _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |
