Jimmy Bain, without a doubt!!! Second, and very close behind, Bob Daisley. Rudy Sarzo?? Seen him twice with Whitesnake, crap both time. Too much "acting", not enuff bass "playing".
 |
That's what I think of Sarzo too. His fans seem enamored with his "charisma" or "flair" and forget that he's a bass player. I rate him as the definite worst of the Dio band bassists. |

Rudy Sarzo gets my vote. He is a truly skilled bassist. Rudy can execute bass lines with precision and style unlike some of the others you all have mentioned. He can also play across genres while many others lack that ability. Many bassists can hit all of the notes on time, but only a few players can make the notes their own. Rudy is among that select few. He sets the groove and rides it all the way home.
As far as his stage persona is concerned, I think he is aggressive and absolutely mesmorizing. I would take issue with his lavish behaviors, such as licking his fingers before plucking the string or licking the bass itself, if it detracted from his performance. It doesnt detract at all because he can multi-task. That makes for a more lively performance, so I find it to be a plus in his bag of tricks. Don't hasten to judge Rudy as simply a sexy, Cuban exhibitionist. He is all of those things, but his "chops" are what set him above the rest.
Some of you have mentioned Geezer Butler. While I do enjoy many of the old Sabbath bass lines, I dont think Geezer was a great bassist. Have you listened to the intro to N.I.B. from Live Evil? His performance clearly strays out of time. Tisk, tisk. His timing was a problem on a lot of the live shows Ive heard. His studio bass lines on songs like A National Acrobat and Country Girl have a wonderful, flowing quality to them, but from a technical point of view they are not very difficult to play because I can play them. |

No question, Jimmy Bain. Collaborated with Ronnie on some classic songs and played on the two cunforgettable albums, Holy Diver and Last in Line. How many songs has Rudy Sarzo wrote with Ronnie James dio ? |

I don't think there was as much credit to the bass inspirational side . I love the music , don't get me wrong, but I kinda felt that there was something missing like not enough harmony from the bass. _________________ Do not worry about the bullet with your name on it, worry about the one that says, "To whom it may concern.."

| Rudy Sarzo's bass playing is a joke. Nothing more to say about it. |

Geezer Butler
And before anyone says that Geezer played in Sabbath not Dio, I'll beg to differ. I saw Geezer play with Ronnie on the Lock Up the Wolves tour at the Palace of Auburn Hills just outside of Detroit
I voted for Rudy though since Geezer is not on the list _________________ Check out Al Diamond Phillips/Nevermet on the web
